Slough Town 1, Dorking Wanderers 3

Steve McKimm’s first game as Slough Town boss ended in defeat as Dorking Wanderers recovered from going a goal down to beat the Rebels 3-1 at Arbour Park this afternoon.

Just a few days after being announced as the side’s new manager, McKimm led the team into battle against Marc White’s Dorking.

And though the Rebels took the lead for the second game in a row through Ruben Shakpoke’s cool finish, the visitors staged a second half recovery to take all three points.

The Rebels headed into the clash looking for their first home win of the season in the league and they got off to the perfect start in the 15th minute when Shakpoke raced onto a superb through ball from Saikou Janneh and rolled the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Just as they’d done in last week’s 2-1 home defeat to Horsham, the home side came close to a second when Johnny Goddard picked out the unmarked Janneh in the box, but the forward was unable to guide his header on target.

Dorking also had their moments, with George Nikaj forcing a good save from Killian Barrett in the 31st minute before Janneh saw his low effort stopped by the boot of keeper Morris a few minutes later.

Josh Barrett almost beat his namesake Killian with a powerful effort just before the half-time whistle, but the Barrow stopper was equal to it and preserved Slough’s lead through to the interval.

That felt significant given their failure to do the same the previous week against Horsham, however, the Rebels led for only six minutes in the second half before Dorking levelled matters through Nikaj’s finish.

James McShane played the ball through for Nikaj, and he set himself before chopping past the defender and smashing the ball emphatically beyond Barrett.

Slough’s brittle confidence then crumbled with McShane firing the visitors in front on the hour mark.

Josh Barrett slipped the ball to his left where McShane was on hand to slot the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.

Barrett added a third in the 77th minute. Jack Wood broke away from his marker and played in Barrett who confidently slotted home to make it 3-1 before celebrating with the buoyant away end.

Slough had limited opportunities to narrow the deficit, though substitute Luke Holness fired a decent effort over the bar in the 84th minute.

The result leaves Slough bottom of the table with only four points from their first 13 matches.

It’s now also three defeats on the spin for Slough as they prepare for tough away matches at Truro City on Tuesday evening and Maidstone United on Saturday.
