Martin Keown says he’s been impressed by Coventry City so far this season despite the club slipping to their sixth defeat from their opening eight games on Saturday.
The former Arsenal defender has confidence in Frank Lampard and remains hopeful that the Sky Blues will pull away from trouble – the team currently sitting second bottom of the league going into today’s fixtures when bottom club Sunderland will move above them if they beat Leeds United this afternoon (Sun).
Discussing City’s narrow 1-0 CBS Arena defeat by Fulham, Match of the Day host Mark Chapman said that Lampard’s most telling post-game comment was that if you’re not going to win, try to get a point.
“Yeah, but he won’t panic,” insisted studio pundit Keown.
“I have been impressed with them and how they have kind of had amnesia when it comes to the defeats they had at the start of the season when they lost to City, lost to Arsenal in a really tough run of fixtures.
“Recently the last four games they have won two and lost two, so it’s how they deal with those defeats and I am sure they will just push on. They have a really big game coming up next against Sunderland who are in and around them in the table.”
Chapman suggested Coventry ’s season will be defined by how they fare against the teams in and around them – having been beaten by Hull at home, Fulham at home and Sunderland up next.
“Yes, and no-one expected Sunderland to be where they are so the table is difficult to predict," responded Keown, "but I have been quite impressed by Coventry and hopefully they will pull out of trouble.”
