Timo Werner has suggested his career may have been different had he joined Liverpool instead of Chelsea, with the German seemingly torn on whether he would have preferred a move to Anfield in hindsight.
Werner had been strongly linked with a switch to the Reds from RB Leipzig in 2020, only to choose Chelsea instead. The forward has confirmed he did speak to Liverpool before he settled on the move to west London.
He would go on to win the Champions League during his spell at Chelsea, but his time in the Premier League certainly did not go how he would have planned it. Werner struggled throughout his time with the Blues, where he scored 23 goals in 89 appearances.
He would end up moving back to Leipzig after two years, and returned to the Premier League with a loan spell at Tottenham in 2024. His career never truly recovered from his time at Chelsea though, and now aged 30, he plies his trade in the MLS with San Jose Earthquakes.
Although his time at Stamford Bridge had a major impact on what looked to be a promising career, Werner insisted on an appearance on The Late Run that he didn’t regret the move to Chelsea.
“I mean, in this time I had a lot of offers from different clubs and you always think after ‘would it be better there? What would happen if I go there?” Werner said.
“But at the end I'm pretty happy how it went. I mean, winning the Champions League, I had a really, really good time at Chelsea. I made a lot of friends there.”
Later in the interview though, Werner did question whether he would have been better suited to a move to Liverpool.
“That's the thing like you said because we were talking about did I ever regret to going to Liverpool or a different team. I think that was the style how we played at Chelsea,” Werner reflected.

“Maybe it was not like the right style for me, but it was the right style for our team back in the day. So you always have to [think] is it right for me or is it right for a team? That was right for the team, maybe not the best thing for me.
“Maybe if I would play at Liverpool or a different team, I would have more of that, like these counter situations. I mean, that's the thing like with do I regret it? Maybe, but not really.”
