Celtic in crisis after Falkirk take home historic win

Falkirk stunned Celtic 2-0 in a historic win to leave Martin O'Neill's side in serious trouble, with questions being asked about the Celtic board's next move after just three wins in 10 Scottish Premiership games

Falkirk created history. Martin O'Neill could be history.

John McGlynn's side defeated Celtic for the first time in 19 years with their remarkable 2-0 triumph.

And it's placed O'Neill in severe difficulty with his struggling Hoops beginning to unravel.

Bairns goalkeeper Scott Bain delivered an outstanding performance to deny his former club, reports the Daily Record.

However, it was the recurring weaknesses within this Celtic squad that were ruthlessly laid bare as rampant Falkirk secured their fourth consecutive top flight victory.

The Bhoys may remain four points clear at the summit but nobody is convinced.

This represents genuine crisis territory for the Parkhead outfit – with merely three victories in 10 matches.

And if anything, the Hoops are deteriorating with each passing week.

Defensively, they were chaotic. Exposed through the middle, vulnerable on the wings and uncertain at the back.

Ethan Ross superbly capitalised on a dreadful error by returning Cameron Carter-Vickers to strike inside three minutes.

Scott Tanser drifted in to slot home a second before half-time with Bain repelling efforts from Camilo Duran in between.

The visitors were spared a third by VAR spotting a Jamie Murrell handball when he forced the ball in.

Yet there was no route back thanks to Bain's brilliance and Hoops incompetence, with substitutes James Forrest and Benjamin Nygren both thwarted by the stopper.

And now it's O'Neill who might require rescuing.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

There was an apocalyptic atmosphere surrounding Celtic and Martin O'Neill at the Falkirk Stadium. The venue evoked memories of Tony Mowbray's Love Street, where accumulated difficulties reached breaking point.

Celtic's hierarchy may lack the resolve to make a decisive judgement on the manager's future, likely highlighting the team's position at the summit of the Premiership.

However, matters are deteriorating rapidly for O'Neill at present, with little indication of how to halt the decline.

He spent time reflecting on his situation during the previous international break, yet circumstances remain unchanged – arguably worsening.

The board has faced criticism for over 12 months, but now the manager finds himself squarely in the crosshairs following a dismal sequence of merely three victories in 10 matches – with another European disappointment looming.

Undoubtedly, O'Neill has been handed a difficult situation following questionable recruitment during the summer transfer window.

Nevertheless, he ought to be extracting superior performances from this squad of players.

O'Neill has maintained there's no dissent in the dressing room over his tactics, yet discontent is unmistakable amongst supporters, and his iconic standing won't shield him from criticism.

CHAOS REIGNS

O'Neill is short on personnel and specific player types. Yet there's also a perception of strategic confusion.

Squad rotation was inevitable following a punishing fixture schedule with additional demanding encounters ahead.

However, it's now November and there remains no clarity regarding his optimal starting eleven or the intended playing philosophy. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was handed his first start in two months but featured alongside Callum McGregor instead of providing the captain with a rest.

Kasper Hogh found himself dropped once more, Oliver Sorensen was absent from the bench entirely while Sebastian Tounekti returned to the squad after being sidelined, and Jordan Lotomba remained missing again.

The off-the-ball work was similarly lacking once more and little surprise Falkirk capitalised on the disarray.

Goodness knows what Besiktas might do this week.

BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE

Carter-Vickers has been dependable for Celts throughout the years but he's looked uncertain this campaign and endured a torrid afternoon against the Bairns.

The opening goal was an absolute disaster.

What should have been a straightforward clearance saw him knock the ball directly to Strain, who punished the error.

He was caught out for speed by Tanser for the second goal too and there were additional questionable moments throughout.

At one stage he received a telling-off from O'Neill for passing the ball completely off the pitch.

It seemed an odd decision throwing him back in on Falkirk's artificial surface but was likely intended to provide match fitness ahead of Besiktas on Thursday.

Following this performance, he may well be left out anyway.

Though he might not be the only one.

BAIRN AGAIN

John McGlynn performed miracles to secure a top six finish last season – and he's repeating the feat this term.

If anything, keeping his side in the top half again would represent an even more remarkable achievement. McGlynn witnessed several of his key players being snapped up during the summer transfer window, with the departures of Calvin Miller and Barney Stewart amongst those leaving.

Replacing such talent was a significant challenge, but Falkirk has once again shown shrewd business in the market. Loan signing Owen Eames has been exceptional, as has Finley Barbrook in central midfield.

McGlynn's side secured their fourth consecutive victory in the top division for the first time since 2007/08, and it wouldn't be shocking to see them continue their momentum for another impressive campaign.

SCOTT SQUAD

Celtic's struggles will attract most of the attention – but Scott Bain's showing deserves recognition.

The former Hoops goalkeeper came back to haunt his previous club with an outstanding display.

Bain produced at least half a dozen brilliant stops to keep his goal secure throughout the match.

Falkirk supporters sang 'Scotland's No. 1' – and they could well be right.

Bain is certain to feature in Sebastian Pocognoli's squad for the fixtures against North Macedonia and Switzerland.

However, perhaps the moment has arrived to hand him the starting position ahead of Angus Gunn.

He's enjoying the finest spell of his career.
