In response to rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, making a big trade earlier this week, the San Francisco 49ers made a major splash on Tuesday when they acquired three-time Pro Bowler DeForest Buckner to bolster their defensive line for the second half. While they have a two-game lead in the NFC West, Seattle remains a looming threat, and sooner or later the Los Angeles Rams will wake up and become a problem in the weeks ahead.
That is probably why The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones reported on Saturday that the 49ers “might not be done” making deals before the Nov. 10 trade deadline and are rumored to be “sniffing around for wide receiver help.”
Adding depth to the wide receiver corps makes a ton of sense because the unit has been battling injuries for months. Following the new rumor, we take a look at five realistic WR trade options for San Francisco before the deadline.
While there has been a lot of talk about the Indianapolis Colts fire sale, including a Jonathan Taylor trade, most around the NFL believe Josh Downs is a player more likely to be traded because he is on an expiring contract. The 25-year-old isn’t a star, per se, but when healthy, he’s a legitimate proven contributor to an offense. In San Francisco’s O, he could be a difference maker in the slot during the second half.
Los Angeles Chargers 2023 first-round pick Quentin Johnston has unfortunately never lived up to his potential. If LA finally comes to terms with their lost season and starts to sell pieces, moving the 25-year-old makes sense.
There is certainly risk in a trade for the 49ers because the Chargers did pick up his $16.4 million fifth-year option for next season. However, if coach Kyle Shanahan can find a way to bring that first-round talent out of him, he could be a huge addition for a reasonable cost.
A player the 49ers are very familiar with that should definitely be available for a low price before Nov. 10 is fan-favorite Jauan Jennings. The man they drafted in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft ended his five-year run in San Francisco in the offseason when he took a one-year, $8 million deal from the Minnesota Vikings. However, he has been used sparingly so far in 2026 and seems like a prime candidate to be moved soon.
It would be logical for the 1-6 Tennessee Titans to be sellers before the NFL trade deadline next month. And one player recent reports have suggested could be moved soon is eight-year veteran Calvin Ridley.
When healthy, the three-time 1,000-plus-yard receiver can make a major impact. While he is owed a lot of money in 2027 ($29.7 million), the 49ers can probably get him at a very affordable rate as the Titans look to get some of that money off their books.
One last player that could be a reasonable trade target for the 49ers before Nov. 10 is Tampa Bay Buccaneers veteran Chris Godwin. The 10-year veteran is not part of Tampa’s future and has been mentioned in recent trade rumors. While the one-time Pro Bowler is no longer in his prime, he can still help San Francisco in the second half. Plus, if it doesn’t work, the team can choose not to exercise his club option for next season.
