Indiana was meant to be the WNBA’s prime destination, but that’s not the case now.
The conversation around Indiana Fever fandom has sparked debate across the WNBA, with critics and defenders viewing the atmosphere through vastly different lenses. While supporters point to historic attendance and unmatched passion, others argue the climate can cross the line.
Tensions peaked during a game against the Aces when an exchange between a courtside fan and A’ja Wilson drew security and went viral online.
Media voices like Cari Champion have also weighed in, highlighting how personal the vitriol has felt for opposing players, as well as throwing accusations at the fan base.

The Athletic’s Annie Costabile got straight to the point about Indiana’s offseason uphill battle. Between talks with players, agents, and front offices, she made it clear that the chatter following the Fever isn’t just background noise, it’s actively making players hit pause before considering a move to Indy.
She spoke to Cari Champion and Jemele Hill: “From there what I learned from again multiple sources, players, agents, league stakeholders is that the perception of the Fever is very much impacting their reputation amongst top free agents. And it’s not just perception for some players, it’s a very stark reality.”
Indiana has some tough calls to make this winter, especially with both Kelsey Mitchell and Sophie Cunningham on the radar. But if we’re being real, Mitchell is the big one. Her scoring punch and fit in the backcourt make locking her up the absolute first box the front office needs to check.
