How a Messy Game Benefits Washington Football On the Road at Nebraska

Entering one of the most hostile environments in the country, Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies continue to battle the injury bug heading into a Week Nine showdown at Nebraska. With question marks surrounding both the running back and quarterback positions, it's safe to say the Husky offense will be nowhere near full strength, but that doesn't mean there isn't a path to victory.

On Monday, starting center Landen Hatchett announced that he will miss the remainder of the season with a head, neck, and spine issue. As for the backfield, Demond Williams Jr. has been upgraded to probable on Saturday, along with running back Jayden Limar. Starting linebacker Xe'ree Alexander and running back Trey Cooley remain questionable for the weekend, as Alexander works his way back from a high-ankle sprain and Cooley continues to deal with a shoulder issue. Finally, freshman edge rusher Ramzak Fruean was listed as out for Saturday on Thursday's injury report, but Fisch told the media on Thursday that he's questionable for the contest.

With a plethora of hobbled starters, Washington will look to replicate a performance of a couple of their future opponents. After averaging over 43 points per game en route to a 5-0 start, the Nebraska offense has seen some regression in recent weeks, putting up a combined 31 points in losses to Indiana and Oregon, respectively. Through seven games, the Huskers are undefeated when scoring 31 or more points, and winless when putting up 17 or less. This means the pressure will once again fall on the Husky defense to keep the game tight and provide opportunities for the offense to make winning plays down the stretch.

For defensive coordinator Ryan Walters, the key is slowing down the quarterback. Dual-threat Anthony Colandrea has been one of the Big Ten's most dynamic players, producing over 1,500 yards passing and 300 yards rushing. While the explosive playmaking has been on full display both by air and land, containing the mobile signal caller will pay dividends for the Huskies' defense.

In his last two games, the UNLV transfer has rushed for 38 and 47 yards, both season-lows in conference play during Nebraska's losing skid.

On the other side, Fisch's unit will have to find a way to keep pace. The third-year head coach has yet to announce a starting quarterback, stating that he wants to keep a competitive advantage over Matt Rhule and the Huskers' defense. Washington has struggled mightily to put up points in Big Ten play, but is coming off their best showing of the season, scoring 38 points in a winning effort over Purdue, led by backup quarterback Elijah Brown.

In order to play spoiler on Saturday night, history shows that a low-scoring affair plays into Washington's favor. While limiting explosive plays and being efficient on offense aren't groundbreaking developments when it comes to playing winning football, they are areas that Washington has struggled with this season.
