George Russell was left furious with Mercedes during the closing stages of Brazilian Grand Prix qualifying after being instructed to back off on a lap that appeared capable of challenging Lando Norris for pole position.

Qualifying at Interlagos was heavily disrupted by rain, with standing water and poor track conditions forcing race control to delay proceedings for an extended period. Several inspections were required before qualifying could resume, turning the battle for pole position into a lengthy affair.

The Mercedes driver was already sitting second in Q3 when he began his final flying lap at Interlagos, with Norris occupying provisional pole position.

Russell looked set to mount a serious challenge to the McLaren driver, setting purple times in both the first and second sectors as he pushed to improve his position.

However, his attempt unravelled in the final sector when he encountered Alex Albon's Williams ahead of him. Russell was instructed by his race engineer to back off, forcing him to abandon what appeared to be a potential pole-winning lap.

The Briton immediately expressed his frustration over team radio, questioning the instruction that prevented him from completing his attempt.

"Mate, you **** told me to back off! What the hell?!" Russell shouted.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff then intervened over the radio, reminding the driver of his position on the grid.

"George, you're P2..." Wolff replied.

Russell responded: "I know, I know."

The Mercedes driver then made his feelings about the interrupted attempt clear, adding: "That was a P1 lap."

Despite the frustration, Russell secured second place on the grid alongside Norris, with Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli qualifying third.
