Ryan Garcia Runs His Own Fighter Of The Year Campaign

Ryan Garcia is out here campaigning for Fighter of the Year like an actor chasing an Oscar. He put together the kind of year that lands him in the conversation, yet he talks like the engraver already finished carving his name onto the plaque.

The WBC welterweight champion took to X to laugh off his detractors, already picturing their meltdown if he takes the hardware.

“I wish I can screenshot peoples faces when I am picked as fighter of the year.
They think comments and their opinion matter
HILLARIOUS”

Ryan builds his case around a February decision over Mario Barrios and a wild second-round blitz of Conor Benn in September. Grabbing a belt and immediately defending it with a highlight-reel knockout gives him a loud pitch to make to the public.

Still, do those two names really justify that kind of swagger?

Barrios and Benn ring bells with casual fans. That definitely juices his campaign, because everyone remembers the violent finish. But star power alone cannot carry the day when stack-ranking his resume against elite runs across the sport.

Voters have to dig into the actual depth of the competition, what each challenger brought to the ring, and how those nights stack up against the best wins in boxing this year.

That brings us right back to the Hollywood analogy. Ryan stays in everyone’s face, feeding his base fresh talking points and using every single critique as fuel to dominate the timeline. Every debate over whether he deserves the trophy simply keeps him front and center.

There is nothing wrong with wanting recognition. Fighters have short careers, and an award can help sell their next appearance. Ryan also understands how to get a reaction without throwing a punch.

Still, he is getting ahead of the voting. His post treats disagreement as something he will eventually laugh at, when the reasonable question is whether beating Barrios and Benn amounts to the best year in the sport.

If Ryan gets his wish and steps into the ring with a 49-year-old Floyd Mayweather Jr. before December wraps up, what does that actually show the ballot casters? Mayweather’s brand still sells pay-per-views by the truckload, but Ryan would be sharing a ring with a man staring down his fiftieth birthday, nearly a decade removed from actual world-class prize fighting.

Beating up a retired legend does not tell voters a single thing about how Ryan handles the elite, prime talent ruling today’s welterweight division.

A third outing would certainly give Ryan an active calendar year. Still, the quality of the man in the opposite corner has to justify the accolades Ryan demands. Mayweather earned his legendary status decades ago; Ryan cannot simply inherit those accolades by beating on a senior citizen.

That kind of booking makes the Oscar campaign comparison dead accurate. Ryan would have a massive box office spectacle to push during voting season, leaving the panel to figure out whether there is any genuine substance behind the marquee name.
