Arsenal have been sending scouts to watch Bournemouth winger Marcus Tavernier, according to reports.
TEAMtalk claim that the 27-year-old’s “hugely impressive” start to the season has attracted the attention of the Gunners.
Tavernier has scored 5 goals in his first 9 Premier League appearances, but that is not the only reason that sporting director Andrea Berta and the recruitment team are taking a closer look at him.
The midfielder is highly versatile. He would add depth to Mikel Arteta’s options on the left flank, but he is equally comfortable playing as a no.10 or on the right-hand side.
The player’s recent form has not gone unnoticed by other clubs. TEAMtalk report that Manchester United have been “monitoring” him “closely,” along with the Gunners.
It is believed that Tottenham and Newcastle United also have a longstanding interest in Tavernier, although it seems neither is poised to make a move for him in January as things stand.
It is not a coincidence that the Premier League champions have been linked with several wingers in recent weeks. Finding competition for Christos Tzolis is said to be Berta’s top priority ahead of the next transfer window.
In addition to Tavernier, the likes of Juventus’s Kenan Yildiz, RB Leipzig’s Antonio Nusa, Atletico Madrid’s Alex Baena, Brentford’s Kevin Schade and Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi have all been mentioned as potential targets.
At the moment, there is no indication as to whether Berta and Arteta have identified a primary option. A lot may depend on who is available in January.
The Gunners may have to wait until the summer to recruit Yildiz, so the question is, should they keep their powder dry and wait, or pursue someone such as Tavernier, who could help them with their push for another Premier League title?
