Jose Aldo explains why Conor McGregor loss upset him so much

The pair had a highly-publicised feud in the build-up to their 2015 fight.

It will be 11 years this December since Conor McGregor clinched the UFC featherweight title by knocking out Jose Aldo Jr in 13 seconds.

That fight proved to be a turning point in the careers of both men. Aldo, a long-time dominant champion who boasted a staggering 10-year win-streak at the time, failed to reach those heights, while McGregor went on to become the biggest star in the sport.

A year later, McGregor beat Eddie Alvarez to become the first man to hold two UFC belts at the same time, a win that brought an end to his full-time run in the UFC. McGregor has fought sparingly since, most recently ending a five-year lay-off with a 60 second loss to Max Holloway.

Aldo and McGregor were never to fight again and never truly seemed destined to be in the octagon together after that night. That fact hurt Aldo dearly, and he knew immediately after his defeat that he would not get his chance at revenge.

I cried a lot because, in my mind, after I lost, I thought, ‘F***, there’s going to be a rematch because I was a dominant champion,’” Aldo said. “Up until that point, I was the first and only featherweight champion in history. So, in my mind, I thought, ‘There’s going to be a rematch, I’m going to fight him again, and it’s going to be a whole new story," Aldo recently said in an interview.

“But then Dana comes [to the locker room] and tells me that Conor can’t make weight anymore, so they can’t do that fight. [White] said he was going to move up to lightweight because it was too difficult for him [to make 145] and he couldn’t do it anymore. It was the last time he was going to make featherweight, win or lose.”

“That’s why I was crying,” Aldo said. “Everyone thinks I was crying because I lost. No, I was crying because I knew we weren’t going to fight again. There was no way for me to get that win back, you know?”
