New York Giants vs. Philadelphia Eagles: 6 things to know about Week 9

The New York Giants (4-2-1) head down the New Jersey Turnpike to face their long-time rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles (2-6), in a midseason NFC East clash between two teams heading in different directions.

Here are six things to know before this Sunday's matchup at Lincoln Financial Field.

The series

Sunday will be the 183rd time the Giants and Eagles have met in the regular season, going back to 1933.

The Eagles lead the all-time series, 93-87-2. They have won eight of the last 10 most recent meetings and three of the past four. Philadelphia is 16-4 in the last 20 meetings with the Giants.

In the most recent regular-season meeting, the Eagles downed the Giants, 38-20, at Lincoln Financial Field in Week 8 last season. The Giants and Eagles split the season series last year.

The Giants are seeking their first win against the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field since 2013, a 13-game span.

John Harbaugh vs. Nick Sirianni

This will be Harbaugh's first game against the Eagles as head coach of the Giants. He was 3-2 against the Eagles during his 18-year tenure as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens.

The Eagles' Nick Sirianni has an 8-3 record against the Giants since he took over as head coach in 2021, which includes a playoff victory after the 2022 season.

Harbaugh and Sirianni have only met once before, a 24-19 Eagles victory over the Ravens in Baltimore on December 1, 2024.

The Eagles so far

Philly opened the season having qualified for the playoffs the past five seasons and in eight of the last nine. They won the Super Bowl after the 2024 season.

After opening this season with two narrow wins against Washington and Tennessee, they have lost their last six games and are in last place in the NFC East. A far cry from what this club is used to.

The Giants up to now

Big Blue entered 2026 with renewed optimism after three disastrous seasons that saw them compile a 13-38 record, the second-worst in the NFL over that span behind only Tennessee.

They opened the season with a win over Dallas and then lost to the Rams on the road. They have wins over Tennessee, Houston, and Arizona. They came back to tie Washington and almost did the same to New Orleans.

The Eagles' struggling offense

Philadelphia is last in the NFL in total offense, averaging just 265.3 yards per game. They are 27th overall in both rushing and passing yards per game and are 30th in points per game (17.1).

The Eagles are 31st in first downs per game, 28th in time of possession, and fourth-down conversions. The latter stat is a huge falloff for Philly, who mastered the "tush push" the past few years, which was nearly impossible to stop.

Unfortunately for them, they have been without quarterback Jalen Hurts, who is on season-ending injured reserve (IR) with blood clots. Hurts was the driver behind the tush push, and the Eagles have also been missing some of their key interior offensive linemen.

New faces

It was only a few weeks ago that one could look ahead on the schedule and see a Jaxson Dart-Jalen Hurts quarterback duel for this week but, with both on long-term IR, this game will have a different feel.

The Giants will start J.J. McCarthy, who they rescued from the Minnesota Vikings' doghouse last month, while the Eagles will go with Tanner McKee, the former Stanford star who has just four NFL starts under his belt.

Other new faces for the Giants in this rivalry this week are: Linebacker Arvell Reese, guard Francis Mauigoa, cornerback Greg Newsome II, wide receivers Malachi Fields and Darnell Mooney, tight end Isaiah Likely, punter Jordan Stout, fullback Patrick Ricard, and defensive linemen Shelby Harris and D.J. Reader.

For the Eagles, wide receiver Makai Lemon, tackle Markel Bell, safety Kenny Moore II, and cornerback Riq Woolen will be facing the Giants as Eagles for the first time.
