Jesus Owono was broken up over the tragic death of Spanish soccer player Jesus de Miguel following an on-field collision between the two Monday.
The FC Andorra goalkeeper was reportedly “crying and praying” and “visibly shaken” in the locker room following the match against CD Tenerife that was postponed at 2-2, Spanish outlet AS reported Tuesday.
All other matches scheduled for Tuesday were pushed back, as ruled by the Spanish Football Federation.
The collison occurred in the seventh minute of stoppage time when CD Tenerife tried to play the ball near midfield and Owono came out of his net, colliding with the striker as they went after the loose ball.
In the immediate aftermath, Owono got to his feet and turned his head to check on De Miguel, who laid on the ground while a FC Andorra player frantically waved for medical help to come onto the pitch.
De Miguel was treated for several minutes before he was put into an ambulance and rushed to a hospital. Owono was later given a red card for the play and heard shouts of “Murderer” as he left the field.
The following morning, the club announced the 30-year-old’s death after suffering cardiac arrest.
FC Andorra closely followed De Miguel’s condition through sporting director Jaume Nogués and a member of medical staff who were both in direct contact with Tenerife.
Owono has since deactivated his Instagram account after receiving abuse online and has not addressed the incident publicly.
A source close to the goalie said he is a “caring” and “very kind” person that has “no malice.”
FC Andorra defended their player, saying he did not intent to hurt De Miguel when rushing out for the ball.
“With broken hearts and devastated, we want to send our deepest condolences to the family of Jesús de Miguel, all his teammates, friends, and CD Tenerife. Rest in peace,” the club said in a statement.
Prior to De Miguel’s death, FC Andorra said Owono had intended to make a public statement and reach out to the family to offer suport and anything they might need.
Following his death, circumstances drastically changed.
Spanish police have opened an investigation for possible involuntary manslaughter.
Reports stated De Miguel suffered head and chest injuries during the collision, which resulted in cardiac arrest. He was resuscitated before going to the hospital and taken into intensive care.
“Broken with pain, with a lump in our throat and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we announce the tragic passing of Jesús de Miguel Alameda this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m.,” Tenerife said in a statement.
“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can ease this profound sense of sadness. We stand with his devastated family, with his loved ones, and with the entire Tenerife football community, who today mourn this cruel turn of events.
“The family of Jesús de Miguel would like to thank everyone for their expressions of support and, from the bottom of their hearts, ask that their privacy be respected at this terrible time.”
