York table tennis juniors shine in Winter League season

In Division Four, 12-year-old Nate Merrill has hit the ground running in his first season in the League, having won 11 out of 12 singles for Wigginton E.

He also won the Under 13 Boys Singles at the Huddersfield Junior 1* tournament on October 10.

Teammate Thomas Souter (16) has also made a good start, having won six out of 12.

Their team drew 5-5 against Wilberfoss A, and both teams remain unbeaten, with Wilberfoss A two points ahead.

Flynn Payne (13) is also playing in this division and has won eight out of nine for York RI F, and he reached the final of the Under 17 Boys Singles at the Scarborough Junior 1* tournament on October 18.

In Division Three, Ryedale B and Wigginton D have won all of their matches, with Ryedale ten points ahead but having played one match more.

Juniors are also doing well in this division, with 13-year-old William Scott (Wigginton D) winning seven out of nine and Henry Hollings (16, Red Goat D) seven out of 15.

In Division One, the top two and unbeaten teams met, resulting in an emphatic 8-2 win for York Vikings over last season’s champions Coneysthorpe.

Hull junior Harry Tomlinson won his three singles for the victors.

Vikings also had a narrow 6-4 win against Red Goat A, with Leeds junior Aaron Wong winning three.

Red Goat A then beat Coneysthorpe 7-3, with Jake McCarthy winning three for the victors, and they leapfrogged Coneysthorpe into second place, six points behind leaders Vikings.

In Division Two, Clarence A and Wigginton A remain unbeaten, having drawn 5-5, with Muhammad Ismail winning his three singles for Wigginton.

Clarence A also drew 5-5 with York RI C, for whom Adam Stone won three.

These three teams are pulling clear at the top of the table, with leaders Clarence A just two points ahead of the other two.

In Division Five, Steve Pottage, with 10 wins out of 12, and Shiv Bhatoa, 12 from 15, have helped Wigginton G to victories in all five of their matches, and they lead by 10 points, ahead of Wigginton H in second.

Coaching sessions are run by Tim Smith and John Farmery at York RI (Fridays), and by Tony Fairburn at Wigginton (Mondays and Wednesdays).
