World media reacts as tears flow after ‘worst Celtic ever’ jibe

For a while on Bonfire Night, this threatened to be another familiar continental tale, with Celtic’s knockout hopes going up in smoke.

Then Martin O’Neill lit the fuse.

Jordan Lotomba conceded a second-half penalty, with Sam Johnstone saving from Junior Olaitan, only for the striker to bury the rebound.

But O’Neill’s changes transformed the night. Callum Osmand needed just 43 seconds to level with his first touch before Camilo Duran rounded the keeper to complete the turnaround.

Orkun Kokcu’s stunning strike made it 2-2 and threatened another European gut punch.

Not this time.

Duran scrambled home from close range to spark bedlam and finally get that continental monkey off Celtic’s back.

Whether it ignites an unlikely charge towards the knockouts remains to be seen.

And the big win in Glasgow sparked the usual calm and measured verdicts in Turkey. Yeah, right.

Here’s how the world’s media reacted.

Nihat Kahveci via NTV Spor (Turkey)

In NBA games, at critical moments, the fans shout, ‘Defence! Defence!’ Beşiktaş were crying out for half-time in the same way. I would have taken Agbadou off immediately. A great football player, according to some. According to whom? He made a clear mistake against Kasımpaşa and there was no problem today because Celtic couldn't get beyond midfield. I watched the worst Celtic I have ever seen in my life in that first half. How did you manage to turn the game into this when there was nothing happening?

Fanatik (Turkey)

Beşiktaş learned nothing from the Kasımpaşa match. They just sat back! When they took the lead away from home, they acted like the match was over. It continued exactly as before. They scored the goal, then just stood there watching. Italiano's team, which had been superior in every aspect until that moment, surrendered. It was unacceptable to bow down to Celtic, who are falling apart in Europe.

UEFA (Nyon)

If the opening period was cagey, the second half was a rip-roaring rollercoaster. Junior Olaitan put the visitors ahead after Sam Johnstone had saved his initial penalty, and then it became the Callum Osmand and Camilo Durán show, with the former equalising and the latter scoring a double either side of Orkun Kökçü's howitzer to give Celtic their first win of the campaign.

Turkiye Today (Turkey)

Camilo Durán struck twice off the bench, including an 87th-minute winner, as Celtic came from behind to beat Beşiktaş 3-2 at Celtic Park in Glasgow on Thursday in the UEFA Europa League. A crowd of 44,394 watched Celtic fall behind after 54 minutes before equalising, taking the lead, being pegged back and then watching Durán decide the match late on.

Irish Examiner (Ireland)

The loudest cheers in the first half came at the expense of former Rangers player Cerny, whose previous visit to Celtic Park ended with him being spoken to by police after squirting liquid at home fans while celebrating a goal. The home fans were briefly lifted by a heavy tackle from Liam Scales on the Czech winger and then by his wayward strike.
