‘Can We Remove the QB Guru Label?’ -- Ex-NFL Scout Warns Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell About J.J. McCarthy’s Stint With Giants

Kevin O’Connell’s reputation for coaching quarterbacks is being questioned once more. The catalyst? J.J. McCarthy showing early promise with the New York Giants.

Although the Minnesota Vikings are 6–1, McCarthy’s performances following his September trade have cast doubts upon O’Connell’s decision to move on from the former first-round pick.

John Middlekauff Questions Kevin O’Connell’s Quarterback Guru Label

Minnesota traded McCarthy to New York for a 2027 fifth-round pick after naming veteran Kyler Murray its starting quarterback in August. Under head coach John Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, McCarthy has appeared in three games, including one start, completing 31 of 49 passes for 495 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

He has a 63.3% completion rate and a 95.2 passer rating. This is in contrast to his 66.1 grade on PFN’s NFL QB Impact metric.

His performance against the Houston Texans was particularly encouraging. McCarthy completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards without a turnover, helping the Giants improve to 4–2–1 and remain atop the NFC East.

His adjustment to New York has also drawn attention to O’Connell’s offensive approach. Critics have questioned whether the Vikings coach tailored his system to McCarthy’s strengths or expected the young quarterback to adapt to a demanding scheme.

McCarthy, meanwhile, added to the discussion by praising Nagy’s ability to adjust his play-calling to the flow of a game, comments that drew comparisons with his previous experience in Minnesota.

Regarding this, former NFL scout John Middlekauff addressed O’Connell’s job security and the implications of McCarthy’s progress during an episode of his “3 & Out” podcast.

While acknowledging Minnesota’s strong record, Middlekauff said the situation could become more complicated if McCarthy continues to develop in New York. He also questioned whether O’Connell’s reputation as a quarterback developer would hold up if McCarthy establishes himself with the Giants.

“Now, can we remove the quarterback guru label? You know his [O’Connell] statement that quarterbacks don’t fail organizations. Organizations fail quarterbacks. If JJ becomes just a solid player this year for the Giants and they make the playoffs, Kevin’s gonna have to delete that off the internet,” Middlekauff added.

Middlekauff also stressed that winning would remain the deciding factor in O’Connell’s job security. If the Vikings win 11 games and reach the playoffs, he does not expect the coach to be fired. However, he believes O’Connell would quickly attract interest from other teams if Minnesota decided to move on.

Minnesota’s quarterback situation has added to this discussion. Murray, who signed with Minnesota in March and won the starting job before McCarthy was traded, has had a hard time with consistency in O’Connell’s offense and is now sidelined by a hamstring injury.

Carson Wentz will start Monday against Buffalo while Murray is sidelined. He has completed 23 of 39 passes for 276 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions in two appearances. However, he has also been sacked six times.

The Vikings have benefited from a defense led by coordinator Brian Flores, which has helped the team reach 6–1. O’Connell, meanwhile, will need consistent offensive production to keep Minnesota among the NFC contenders.
