Morgan Rogers was majestic on Saturday. Big games call for big moments from big players, and Rogers struck the crucial blow as Chelsea saw off the challenge of Manchester United.
He danced through United’s midfield, and then their defence, before chipping a left-footed effort over Senne Lammens to score his sixth goal for Chelsea. A finish Joao Pedro is always urging him to use.
With 10 goals and assists in 12 games, Rogers has made a brilliant start to life at Chelsea. He’s even matched Mason Mount’s record at Man United, where the former England star has played 80 times.
But what is quite clear is that Rogers is benefiting from playing in this Chelsea side. Alongside best pal Cole Palmer, with one of the league’s best strikers in Pedro, and leaning on veteran Danny Welbeck.
While Rogers was deemed a real coup for Chelsea in the summer, Welbeck’s arrival came as a shock. Chelsea decided to bring in some experience, signing Welbeck, Jordan Henderson and Emi Martinez.
Speaking on TNT Sports after Chelsea’s 2-0 win, former Manchester United midfielder Hargreaves revealed a conversation he had with his old teammate Welbeck off camera about Rogers at Chelsea.

Here's our Chelsea player ratings vs Man United! Who deserves higher or, perhaps, even lower? 👀
“Welbz was coming through at a really good United team; we all had players coming through. Great trainer, always listened. He was just walking through with Morgan Rogers,” Hargreaves said on Saturday.
“I said to him what a great mentor. He said ‘I’m on him, I’m on him to be better because he’s such a talent’. I didn’t realise how big he is!” The former England international added, after Rogers’ goal.
When Chelsea beat Arsenal to the signing of Rogers, many questioned the move. Chelsea fans were delighted with their own club’s ambition and speed with which they got a deal done for the England ace.
But others questioned it. Why would Rogers join a side not in Europe? Could he live up to his price tag? Well, after 12 games, nine of which have come in the Premier League, he has been worth every penny.
According to FotMob, Rogers has been the Premier League’s fourth-best player this season, behind Erling Haaland (1st – 7.81), Declan Rice (2nd – 7.79) and Joao Pedro (3rd – 7.74). Rogers has a rating of 7.72.
But in terms of players that joined a new club in the most recent window, Rogers is best. The next-best is Tottenham star Jan Paul van Hecke, after his summer arrival at Spurs from Brighton for around £50m.
