Luton Town – Wonderful Memories #1
Luton Town – Wonderful Memories #1

Time for something new.

With international breaks eating into the number of news articles I have access to, I thought I would introduce a new mini-series to keep you entertained.

I’m often asked whether during my time supporting the Hatters if I have a favourite memory, one that sticks out more than all the others.

Each time I have to point out that there are so many, I am unable to choose just one.

Therefore, I thought, in this mini-series, I could feature a few of those games that spring to mind.

The first comes from the 1973/1974 season.

That particular season will always hold a special place in my heart.

Just entering my teenage years, I used to go to every home game without fail and the end of the season was magical.

With two games to go, the unbelievable, to me, was on the verge of happening, Luton Town needed just the 1 point to clinch promotion to the top tier of English football.

That point was achieved in a 1-1 draw away to West Bromwich Albion, but that is not the game I intend to feature.

Instead, one of my favourite memories came a few days later, 01-May-1974, when Sunderland came to Kenilworth Road for the final game of the season.

It was to be a promotion party!

There were 20,285 supporters in the ground that night intending to have a ball.

With the queues lengthy outside, to say the least, I snuck into the corner of the Maple Road that adjoins the Oak Road stand.

The whole ground was a cauldron of noise, a sea of smiling faces enjoying living the dream.

I’ll never forget watching the packed Oak Road End swaying in unison, from my position it looked as if they were sunken into the ground a few feet lower than where I was.

With promotion already achieved, the game become something akin to a goal-fest with Sunderland emerging the victors, winning 4-3.

But the loss didn’t matter, the party continued long after the final whistle and also long into the night, who would have thought that when my late father first took me to Kenilworth Road, back in 1968, that 6 years later we would be a top tier team.

A wonderful memory back then and still a wonderful memory over 50-years later.
