British players claim wheelchair tennis titles at Abingdon

They claimed five of the six available titles in a standout performance at the last UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour event of 2026 to be hosted by the LTA.

Paralympic medallist Lucy Shuker reached a career milestone by securing her 100th doubles title.

Ruben Harris, a 19-year-old fourth seed and two-time LTA Junior Wheelchair Player of the Year, lifted his first senior men’s singles title after defeating France’s Clement Miranda 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.

Mr Harris said: "I went in to the tournament feeling confident and so I’m really happy with how I performed over the weekend.

"In the semi-finals I was 5-4 down against the top seed, and then I was 4-1 down in the first set tie-break, but managed to come back and win.

"So I was really pleased with that and in the second set I came out and felt a little bit more confident to win in straight sets."

He and Mr Miranda finished runners-up in the men’s doubles, losing to the second-seeded French pair Timothee Da Costa Santos and Olivier Langlois.

In the women’s singles, second seed Ruby Bishop came from behind to defeat top seed and 2024 champion Abbie Breakwell 0-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Ms Bishop then teamed up with Ms Shuker to claim the women’s doubles title.

Ms Bishop said: "I’m really proud of the performances I put in this week and delighted to have come away with both the singles and doubles titles.

"I spent a lot of time training in Abingdon as a junior, with former Paralympians Marc McCarroll and Jordanne Whiley, so to come back and win multiple titles at a venue that almost feels like a second home makes it even more special.

"It was a particularly special moment to win the doubles alongside Lucy, helping her secure her 100th career title."

The pair secured a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ms Breakwell and Belgium’s Luna Gryp in the final.

Ms Shuker said: "To get that 100th title in the UK with a British player has put a massive smile on my face and it’s one of the memories I will really, truly treasure.

"It was so nice to do it in Abingdon, amongst people who have been there from the start of my career."

Kevin Lewis won the quad singles title after remaining unbeaten in four round-robin matches.

He defeated 2023 and 2024 champion Oliver Cox 7-5, 6-2 in the deciding match.

Mr Cox, who is from Oxfordshire, finished runner-up in the singles but partnered Gary Cox to win the quad doubles title.

The pair beat Melvil Vedrenne-Cloquet of France and Germany’s Konstantin Voglis 6-2, 6-2 in the final.
