Liverpool fans have lashed out at one player after Andoni Iraola's men lost 3-2 to Fenerbahce in the Champions League, despite leading twice.
Youngster Trey Nyoni continued his impressive string of performances with a deflected effort to open the scoring. However, the hosts were level before the break as a Mason Greenwood free-kick went past Alisson via Jeremy Jacquet's midsection.
In a back-and-forth encounter in Turkey, the English side struggled to control the match. Alexander Isak headed home with his first touch after coming on, but the home side pulled level just moments later. Vedat Muriqi headed home the winner in the 79th minute.
One man who is usually exempt from criticism is the Liverpool captain. Virgil van Dijk has been imperious since joining from Southampton in 2018, but might finally be showing signs of his age catching up to him.
The 35-year-old is still one of the best defenders in the world, but he struggled at times to deal with Romelu Lukaku and the other Fenerbahce forwards. Van Dijk only won three of his six duels and didn't win a single tackle.
He did manage two clearances and interceptions, but also fouled two opposition players. The Dutchman's passing was uncharacteristically off as well, as he only found a red shirt 72 times from 83 attempted passes.
Supporters were quick to voice their frustrations at Van Dijk's performance. One suggested the centre-back is past his best, saying: "Van Dijk is really not the player he was."
Another X user said: "Van Dijk is having a real stinker." His attempts to pick out long passes were a source of frustration for some. "Van Dijk is forcing these long balls. Wtf is he doing?" one asked.
"Van Dijk has been awful defensively," was one blunt summary. Others were quick to suggest that it could be coming towards the time for Van Dijk's Liverpool career to come to a close.
"We need to start having the conversation that VVD isn’t the same player he once was. He’s had a very poor start and Jacquet has had to step up.
"I love him, but I think it’s time we accept that he should leave in the summer."
After conceding three goals and failing to command a solid backline, the Netherlands international was even accused of being 'at the heart of everything bad'.
