ARSENAL travel to Slavia Prague in the Champions League this evening.
Fans watching at home will notice both sets of players are wearing black armbands in tribute to the late Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel.
Arsenal and Slavia Prague are wearing black armbands in memory of Tenerife forward De Miguel, who died aged 30 after he suffered head and chest injuries during a match against FC Andorra on Monday.
The striker collided heavily with opposition goalkeeper Jesus Owono, who was shown a straight red card for the challenge.
A long ball was lumped forward in the latter stages of the game before De Miguel was clattered by the onrushing Owono just over halfway.
Some players were visibly distraught and others were distressed as De Miguel lay motionless on the pitch.
Medical staff treated the striker on the turf for more than five minutes before he was rushed to hospital by ambulance.
Spanish outlet Marca reported that De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest on his way to hospital and was resuscitated by paramedics.
The centre-forward was admitted to intensive care, where his condition was described as “stable but serious” by Tenerife on Monday night.
But his health worsened and he was pronounced dead during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Tenerife confirmed De Miguel’s tragic passing on X: “Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. of Jesus de Miguel Alameda.
“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness.
“We stand alongside his devastated family, alongside his loved ones, alongside all of tinerfenismo that today weeps for this cruel outcome.
“The family of Jesus de Miguel thanks each and every one of the expressions of support received, and likewise requests, from the heart, the utmost respect for their privacy in these terrible moments.”
Condolences flooded in from football clubs around the globe, including Arsenal.
The Premier League champions wrote on X: “Everyone at Arsenal is devastated to hear of the passing of Jesús de Miguel and sends their heartfelt condolences to his family and CD Tenerife at this incredibly sad time.”
Arsenal also remembered De Miguel during training on Tuesday, with players and staff arm in arm for a period of silence.
Before all Uefa matches this week, a moment of silence will be held in memory of the Spaniard.
