Frozen-Out Chelsea Winger Eyed By Serie A Club: Should The Blues Agree A Loan?
Chelsea

Xabi Alonso arrived at Chelsea ahead of the 2026/27 campaign after a summer of heavy change, and the early returns have been encouraging. The Blues sit fourth in the Premier League this November, although balancing an explosive attack with defensive consistency remains a work in progress. That context shapes every piece of Chelsea transfer news at Stamford Bridge right now, because Alonso needs fixes in specific areas rather than wholesale additions.

The wide attacking positions are not among those areas. Chelsea paid Aston Villa £117 million for Morgan Rogers this summer, tying him to a contract that runs until 2033, and he has become an indispensable starter in the left-sided attacking role. Rogers has scored six goals in 12 games under Alonso, a return that has settled the position.

Pedro Neto gives Alonso further quality alongside him. The Portugal international cost £51.3 million; his deal runs until 2032, and he has contributed three goals as well as a crucial creative presence in the front line. With those two established, Chelsea need no immediate reinforcement in wide roles, which makes every peripheral winger on the squad list surplus to requirements. That reality matters for one player in particular, who sits well outside that picture.

Latest Chelsea transfer news from Italy

According to Sport Witness, citing Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma view Jamie Bynoe-Gittens as a key January target as they strengthen their attack for Champions League football under Gian Piero Gasperini. The Giallorossi failed with a summer attempt for the 22-year-old and now plan a winter approach, ideally on loan. Chelsea’s stance on the terms remains unclear.

Registered as Jamie Gittens, the winger joined from Borussia Dortmund in 2025 and has struggled, playing fewer than 1,000 Premier League minutes last season. This term he has managed two substitute appearances totalling 55 minutes, both in the EFL Cup.

His explosive acceleration, elite one-v-one dribbling and sharp cut-ins thrived at Dortmund, but Alonso demands structural discipline, positional awareness and defensive work-rate, which his direct style does not offer. With Rogers thriving, he also lacks the tactical versatility and physical strength to break in, so he does not suit Alonso right now.

Should Chelsea sell Bynoe-Gittens permanently or accept Roma’s loan?

Chelsea should accept the straight loan. Gittens is a depreciating asset, and a season without Premier League football has damaged his market value. Demanding a high fee or complicated obligation terms in January risks collapsing talks, much like the summer package involving Manu Kone.

A loan lets him play under Gasperini, who has improved young attackers such as Donyell Malen, with Champions League exposure and exposure to Serie A minutes acting as a showcase. If Gittens rediscovers his Dortmund form, Chelsea enter summer 2027 from strength, either reintegrating a confident player or raising his asking price for a profitable permanent sale.
