Ross County forward Lewis Jamieson believes he gave Staggies fans a taste of what he can bring to the side in their KDM Evolution Trophy win over Celtic B.
The 24-year-old missed a few weeks through injury, making his return to the starting 11 against the young Hoops.
He posed a regular threat from the right flank, cutting inside on several occasions to either cross or shoot with his stronger left foot.
That was how County’s opening goal came about, with Jamieson finding a yard of space to pick out Ricco Diack at the back post, who nodded the ball down and into the path of Kieran Phillips to score.
With the Staggies absolutely flying in front of goal this season, it was a reminder that Jamieson can contribute with quality to help their charge across multiple competitions.
“That’s what I like to do – get on my left foot and put deliveries in for the strikers,” he said afterwards.
“With two up front, it gives you a better target to try and hit. I was actually hoping Ricco would knock it in himself so I could get the assist, but it was still a goal and we were pretty comfortable after that I think.
“Football is full of ups and downs. I had a setback with injury, but when I get my chance I need to try and take it as much as possible.
“I probably did feel a yard off it, but that’s just down to a lack of game time. With these minutes in the bank now, I can take it forward.
“Obviously it’s tough not playing, because that’s what you want to do and why I came here.
“The lads have made me as comfortable as possible, and have helped me every step of the way when I’ve had my own battles.
“It’s a mental game sometimes when you’re out, but with the lads doing so well I just need to bide my time. Thankfully against Celtic B, I put a bit of quality in for Ricco and Kieran to go and score.”
Celtic B were the third B Team that Ross County faced in this season’s KDM Evolution Trophy, and the last as all colts sides have now been knocked out.
They were three very different matches: a chaotic defeat against Aberdeen, a record-breaking victory over Hearts, and then a professional performance to see off Celtic.
Jamieson has been on the other end of that equation, having played four times for St Mirren B in the Challenge Cup at the very start of his professional career, and he insists it will benefit the young players regardless of what level they go on to play at.
“It gave me exposure to playing against older, more experienced players,” he reasoned.
“That can only be a good thing going forward, even if results don’t show it. It helps young players’ development massively experienced that kind of football.
“If they can go and get a loan deal off the back of it, they already have that in the tank to go and show what they’re really capable of.
“Celtic B gave us utmost respect, and played a couple of first team boys, so we knew it would be a tough game.
“We have the equivalent of two 11s who are firing on all cylinders, so being drawn to come up here when we are flying high is a tough task for them too.
“That’s how we should be approaching it because it’s a chance for us to go and experess ourselves as well, but I think it’s a good thing for the young boys to experience that.”
Jamieson and his County teammates will now turn their attention back to league action, with Peterhead due to visit Dingwall this weekend.
“We have built up a lot of momentum this season so far, and we have scored something like 90 goals this season so far,” he added.
“It’s incredible really, and we just need to keep going. It doesn’t matter if it’s five, six or seven; or if we win 1-0; as long as we win on a Saturday, it keeps our momentum going, and we want to maintain that for as long as possible.”
