Finally, Celtic are up and running in Europe.

It looked like being a familiar Europa League story on Bonfire Night - the one where the Hoops chances of making the knockout rounds goes up in flames.

But Martin O'Neill found a much needed spark from the bench as his changes ignited a second half that turned more times than a Catherine wheel.

Jordan Lotomba was thrown in for his first start and it looked like it could backfire when he conceded an early second half spot kick. Junior Olaitan saw his effort saved by Sam Johnstone, but was able to blast the rebound in from a yard after it dropped kindly out of the sky.

O'Neill leaving Camilo Duran and Callum Osmand on the bench was questioned pre-match and their introduction paid off immediately. Osmand's daisy cutter levelled the game with his first touch just 43 seconds after coming on.

Duran then rounded the keeper to put Celtic ahead, although it looked like the Premiership champions were to be denied yet again when Orkun Kokcu sent a wonderfully clean strike past Johnstone from distance to square it up at 2-2.

But Celtic had the final say when Duran scrambled home from close range to finally get the continental monkey of the collective back at Parkhead and just maybe, spark an unlikely surge into the knockouts. Maybe.

Here's how the world's media reacted.

Fanatik (Turkiye)

Turkish analyst Orhan Yildrim wrote for Fanatik: "Beşiktaş learned nothing from the Kasımpaşa match. They just sat back! When they took the lead away from home, they acted like the match was over. It continued exactly as before.

"They scored the goal, then just stood there watching. Italiano's team, which had been superior in every aspect until that moment, surrendered. It was unacceptable to bow down to Celtic, who are falling apart in Europe."

BBC (UK)

"Manager Martin O'Neill turned to his bench for a spark, bringing on Callum Osmand and Camilo Duran to replace Sebastian Tounekti and James Forrest out wide. The impact was almost instantaneous.

"Osmand's first touch nestled in the bottom corner of Alexander Nubel's goal, just 43 seconds after the 20-year-old attacker came on. All of a sudden, Celtic had a threat in behind and Besiktas looked rattled.

"Then, on 77 minutes, O'Neill withdrew Kasper Hogh after another underwhelming display from the club record signing and moved Duran through the middle. "Again it had the desired effect.

"Osmand played Duran through with a delightful pass and the Colombian rounded Nubel before slotting Celtic into the lead. Orkun Kokcu levelled for Besiktas with a fine strike, but Duran had the final say two minutes later, controlling Kieran Tierney's scuffed shot and beating Nubel from close range to send the home support into ecstasy."

UEFA (Europe)

"If the opening period was cagey, the second half was a rip roaring rollercoaster. Junior Olaitan put the visitors ahead after Sam Johnstone had saved his initial penalty, and then it became the Callum Osmand and Camilo Durán show with the former equalising and the latter scoring a double between Orkun Kökçü's howitzer to give Celtic their first win of the campaign."

Turkiye Today (Turkiye)

"Camilo Duran struck twice off the bench, including an 87th-minute winner, as Celtic came from behind to beat Besiktas 3-2 at Celtic Park in Glasgow on Thursday in the UEFA Europa League league phase.

"A crowd of 44,394 watched Celtic trail after 54 minutes, then equalise, take the lead and lose it again before Duran decided the match late on."

Irish Examiner (Ireland)

"Substitutes Callum Osmand and Camilo Duran sparked Celtic into life as the Scottish champions got off the mark in the Europa League in a 3-2 victory over Besiktas.

"Martin O’Neill’s side were heading for a seventh defeat in 11 matches and bottom place when Junior Olaitan netted on the rebound after Sam Johnstone had saved his 54th-minute penalty. But Osmand drilled home the equaliser with his first touch in the 62nd minute, seconds after coming off the bench in a triple change, and the 20-year-old set up Duran to put the hosts in front.

"Besiktas sub Orkun Kokcu equalised from long range but Celtic went back in front within 60 seconds when Duran stabbed home an 87th-minute winner from six yards.

"The win hands Celtic a fighting chance of progressing especially with Portuguese second-tier side Torreense as their next opponents."

The same outlet also noted Vaclav Cerny taking it in the neck as they wrote: "The loudest cheers (in the first half) came at the expense of former Rangers player Cerny, whose previous visit to Celtic Park ended with him being spoken to by police after squirting liquid at home fans while celebrating a goal.

"The home fans were briefly lifted by a heavy tackle by Liam Scales on the Czech winger and then his wayward strike."

TNT Sports (UK)

Former Celtic midfielder Stiliyan Petrov was also impressed with O'Neill's substitutions as Osmand emerged from the bench and changed the game.

He said on punditry duty for TNT: "Everything changed with the subs; Osmand coming on and Duran going through the middle. They freed up space for Nygren and Baur. It was a really positive 30 minutes."
