Celtic’s appeal against the decision to shut supporters out of their next home Scottish Cup tie has dragged into a second day without a verdict.

Rangers are also appealing the sanctions imposed after the crowd trouble during Celtic’s penalty shootout win at Ibrox in March.

And now, both clubs are bracing for the SFA decision.

Celtic and Rangers still waiting for SFA appeal verdicts

According to The Scottish Sun, the independent appeal hearing began on Monday, October 26, but deliberations have continued into Tuesday.

Celtic and Rangers will receive the decisions and written reasons before the outcomes are announced publicly.

Both clubs were ordered to play their next home Scottish Cup match behind closed doors following the scenes at Ibrox on March 8.

Each club was also told to pay its next home cup opponent £100,000 to make up for lost ticket revenue.

The punishment could get worse if there is another breach before the end of the 2027/28 season. Another closed-door cup tie and a further £100,000 payment are hanging over both clubs.

Why Celtic objected to the Ibrox punishment

Celtic called the punishment ‘disproportionate’ back in August. The club argued that the disciplinary panel had overlooked differences in how the two sets of supporters behaved.

In their response to the Scottish FA’s decision, Celtic also questioned why they should receive the same punishment as Rangers.

Celtic said: “Another important distinction is that, on this occasion, Celtic were not the home club, responsible for stadium safety arrangements.”

The independent review had raised serious questions about Rangers’ security planning, including a risk assessment that was almost identical to the previous league meeting despite thousands more Celtic supporters attending the cup tie.

Both clubs admitted breaching Disciplinary Rule 37, which covers supporter conduct and security responsibilities.

If the appeal fails, Celtic will lose the gate receipts from their next home Scottish Cup tie and have to compensate their opponents.

The club’s next cup opponents therefore have £100,000 riding on the outcome of the appeal.
