Why do Chelsea and Tottenham hate each other? Rivalry explained and most memorable battles
Roberto De Zerbi press conference after Tottenham 3-1 Coventry

Chelsea and Tottenham are set to reprise one of the fiercest rivalries in Premier League history this weekend when the two sides meet at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have the edge over Spurs on the pitch, winning 11 of the last 13 meetings across all competitions and losing just once at home since November 1990.

Their on-field dominance, though, has not mellowed the testy atmosphere that builds each time this fixture rolls around.

The rivalry is often cited as having started in 1967, when they contested the FA Cup final in front of 100,000 spectators at the old Wembley, with Spurs coming out on top in what is commonly referred to as the ‘Cockney Cup Final’.

It took on a different, more violent significance during the 1974/75 season when a bitterly contested affair was abandoned as supporters fought on the pitch with both teams battling against relegation.

From title deciders to eight-goal thrillers and everything in between, Chelsea vs Tottenham is never short of drama. Standard Sport has picked out the three most memorable match-ups over recent years.

Spurs denied title during ‘Battle of the Bridge’

In recent history, Chelsea have been the team chasing Premier League titles, while Spurs have been reduced to playing the pantomime villain in this fixture.

However, in 2016 those roles reversed, with Tottenham going toe-to-toe for the Premier League title with surprise package Leicester, while Chelsea toiled towards the bottom of the table.

Chelsea had nothing to play for as they welcomed Spurs to Stamford Bridge in May 2016, but knew they could stop their opponents’ title charge in its tracks if they avoided defeat.

The game was racked with tension from the first minute, with hefty challenges from both teams leading to a flurry of yellow cards.

Spurs, though, kept their composure and looked set for a famous away victory as they headed into the break 2-0 up and firmly in control.

The game only seemed to be going one way - that was until Gary Cahill struck early in the second half to halve the deficit before Eden Hazard curled home a superb late leveller to leave Tottenham stunned.

Having buckled under the pressure, emotions boiled over, with Spurs receiving nine yellow cards. Mousa Dembele was handed a retrospective six-game ban for gouging the eye of Chelsea striker Diego Costa.

Harry Kane dominant as five-star Spurs run riot

Long before Harry Kane was considered a world-class striker and potential Ballon d’Or winner, he spent years trying to prove to his critics that he was not just a one-season wonder.

That all started during the 2014/15 season, when he exploded onto the scene with 31 goals across all competitions for a young Spurs side, quickly gaining attention under Mauricio Pochettino.

At that time, Chelsea were an established threat closing in on their fourth Premier League title, but they would be given a stark reality check by Kane and Co. during a blistering 5-3 loss on New Year’s Day.

Chelsea had taken an early lead at White Hart Lane, but Kane soon took control of the game as Spurs scored four without reply in a barnstorming 22-minute spell.

Kane had already netted 17 league goals before the turn of the year, but his talismanic performance against Chelsea announced him as a player capable of dominating against the best teams.

Postecoglou defiant as nine-man Spurs ship four in chaotic clash

Despite being reduced to nine men against Chelsea in November 2023 and losing 4-1 at home, then Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou still managed to claim a moral victory, as he stated that he was proud of his players for sticking to the team’s principles.

Spurs started ferociously and took an early lead through Dejan Kulusevski, but soon found themselves two men down after Destiny Udogie and Cristian Romero were each sent off.

Inexplicably, Tottenham continued to play with the same high line they started the game with, affording Chelsea countless opportunities which they did not take.

In the end, Chelsea got their act together, with Nicolas Jackson running in a late hat-trick after Cole Palmer’s penalty. But remarkably, it was Postecoglou who ended up being the happier of the two managers as he praised his players’ resilience in the face of adversity.
