Liverpool are likely to have a new No. 1 between the sticks next season as Alisson Becker’s contract ticks down.
Alisson has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Reds’ history over the last nine years, but there have been question marks over his performances this season, and a parting of the ways in 2027 looks like being a natural end to his time at Anfield.
Giorgi Mamardashvili has faced similar doubts over his ability to step up despite being handpicked by Liverpool as succession plan to their legendary Brazilian in 2024. But after confirming that Alisson could definitely leave the Reds next summer, journalist Fabrizio Romano says that Liverpool are still very happy with Mamardashvili as well.
There have been suggestions that Caoimhin Kelleher would be a better replacement for Alisson than Mamardashvili, but if the veteran does depart, it is perhaps only fair that the current back-up finally gets his chance.
While speaking to his YouTube channel on Sunday morning, Romano suggested that this is the current plan at Liverpool, although he did leave the door open to the chance that Alisson stays.
“Andoni Iraola was asked about the Alisson situation and whether it’s going to be his last season for Liverpool. Iraola said I hope not, I hope he’s going to stay, he’s a crucial player for us, but obviously it’s on the player, it’s on the club, it’s not a question for me,” he said.
“The answer is that Liverpool are aware of the fact that Alisson was considering a switch to Italy, to Juventus in the summer of 2026. Then Liverpool decided to extend his contract for a season and Alisson decided to stay, to help the club in a moment of transition from Arne Slot to Andoni Iraola, in a moment that they’d already lost Mo Salah and other important players, so he didn’t want to leave in a summer where Liverpool started this transition. He respected the club’s decision and he wanted to stay and fight one more season for Liverpool.”
“If you ask me about Alisson, is there a chance this is the last season for Alisson? I think there’s a serious possibility,” Romano added. “It’s not 100 per cent decided, but it’s a serious possibility because there is interest from several countries and Alisson could explore these opportunities.
“Let’s see how the season will end, it’s really early, Liverpool might decide to offer him a new contract, but I can also tell you that Liverpool are very happy with Mamardashvili. Every time he’s been involved he did quite well.”
Although things are perhaps yet to be set in stone, it seems very likely at this point that Alisson will leave and Mamardashvili will step up to replace him as Liverpool’s No. 1.
That news will be greeted with scepticism by segments of the Reds’ fanbase, but after two years playing second-fiddle, Mamardashvili looks like he will finally get the chance to prove himself in a bigger role.
