For just the second time in 37 attempts, Tottenham Hotspur earned the bragging rights against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side had the better of the first half and had the first real chance after Andy Robertson crossed from the left in the box to Omar Marmoush, but his low shot was well saved by Mike Penders. Chelsea then pounced on a mistake by Antonin Kinsky, but he recovered to make a strong stop to deny Jordan Henderson.
The visitors continued to be the better side and opened the scoring with just 13 minutes remaining as young Mike Penders punched into his own net from a corner. Cole Palmer was then shown a second yellow card minutes later to reduce the Blues to ten men. Mathys Tel then scored a stunning solo goal to seal the memorable deal at Stamford Bridge after more than eight years.
Tottenham playmaker James Maddison has been plagued by injury problems, only making his first start for the club since May 2025, last time out against Coventry City. The 29-year-old was deemed doubtful for the game by De Zerbi in his press conference, but he was passed fit to start on Saturday.
Maddison started the game brilliantly and was instrumental in Tottenham controlling large periods of the first half against Chelsea. After the interval, though, he suffered an injury setback and was forced off the pitch. The England international went down soon after the second half got underway, stooping and looking to the bench before hitting the deck as his teammates signalled team doctors onto the pitch.
The creative midfielder looked defeated as he appeared to hold back tears while being treated and walking off the pitch. He went straight down the tunnel after being substituted by former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who was met by loud boos from the home crowd as he entered the fray.
The sight that no Tottenham Hotspur fan wanted to see.

In just his second start after a long injury lay-off, James Maddison goes down.
He gets up and limps off but there seems to be some concern among the Spurs staff.

This is a gut-wrenching blow for Maddison, who has not long returned from a nine-month lay-off. Thankfully, the Englishman later came out of the dressing room and returned to the bench to celebrate his team’s massive 2-0 victory over their bitter London rivals.
De Zerbi will be able to provide more information on Maddison’s actual issue. Fingers crossed!
