Wretched Celtic in crisis after Falkirk shocker as board face major Martin O'Neill decision - 5 talking points

The Bairns won against the Hoops for the first time since 2007 and it turns up the heat on the Parkhead boss

Falkirk made history. Martin O’Neill might be history.

John McGlynn’s Bairns took down Celtic for the first time in 19 years with their stunning 2-0 victory.

And it’s left O’Neill in serious bother with his malfunctioning Hoops starting to come apart at the seams.

Bairns keeper Scott Bain had a stormer to keep his old side at bay.

But it was the familiar failings in this Celtic squad that were brutally exposed as red-hot Falkirk made it four top flight wins on the spin.

Celts may still be four points clear at the top of the table but no one is fooled.

This is well and truly crisis time for the Parkhead club – with just three wins in 10 games.

And if anything, the Hoops are getting worse by the week.

Defensively, they were a shambles here. Wide open in midfield, weak down the flanks and jittery at the back.

Celtic's Liam Scales

Ethan Ross brilliantly pounced on a woeful gaffe by returning Cameron Carter-Vickers to lead inside three minutes.

Scott Tanser skipped in to bury a second before the break with Bain batting away attempts by Camilo Duran in between.

Celts were spared a third by VAR clocking a Jamie Murrell handball when he bundled in.

But there was no way back thanks to Bain’s heroics and Hoops bungling, with subs James Forrest and Benjamin Nygren both denied by the keeper.

And now it’s O’Neill who might need saving.

Here's Record Sport's five talking points from the Falkirk Stadium:

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

There was an end of days feel about this for Celtic and Martin O’Neill. The Falkirk Stadium felt like Tony Mowbray’s Love Street, where all the problems building up come to a head.

Celtic chiefs might not have the stomach to make a major call over the manager and they will probably point to the fact the side is still top of the Premiership.

But things are unravelling for O’Neill right now and it's hard to see a way out of the tailspin.

He took took time to consider his position during the last international beak but nothing has changed – and has arguably got worse.

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill

The board have copped it for over a year but now the boss is right in the firing line on a run of just three wins in 10 games – with another European stinker up next.

There’s no doubt O’Neill has ben dealt a tough hand with ropy recruitment over the summer.

But he should still be getting more out of this group of players.

O’Neill has insisted there’s no dissent in the dressing room over his tactics but there certainly is unrest in the stands and his legendary status won’t save hm from flak.

CHAOS REIGNS

O’Neill is lacking personnel and certain player profiles. But there’s also a sense of a lack of a plan.

He was always going to rotate his side after a gruelling run of games and a coupe more to come.

But it’s now November and there’s still no clue what his best line up actually is or how they are meant to play.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made his first start in two months but it was alongside Callum McGregor rather than to give the skipper a break. Kasper Hogh was dropped again, there was no sign of Oliver Sorensen on the bench but Sebastian Tounekti was back on there after being frozen out and no sign of Jordan Lotomba again.

The gameplay without the ball was also absent again and no wonder Falkirk pounced on the confusion.

Goodness knows what Besiktas might do this week.

BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE

Carter-Vickers has been rock-solid for Celts over the years but he’s been shaky this season and he had a nightmare against the Bairns.

The opener was a total howler.

It should have been a simple clearance. Instead he knocked the ball straight into the path of Strain, who made him pay.

He got done for pace by Tanser for the second as well and there were other dodgy moments as well.

Falkirk's Ethan Ross scores against Celtic

At one point he got a roasting from O’Neill for passing the ball right out of the pitch.

It was a strange call chucking him back in on the Falkirk plastic pitch but it was presumably to get a run out before Besiktas on Thursday.

After this one, he might not be involved anyway.

But he might not be alone.

BAIRN AGAIN

John McGlynn worked wonders to deliver a top six finish last season – and he’s at it again this term.

If anything, it would be an even more impressive job to keep his team in the top half again.

McGlynn watched some of his star men getting cherry picked in the summer, with the likes of Calvin Miller and Barney Stewart departing.

It was a tall order replacing that quality but Falkirk has been smart in the market again. On-loan Owen Eames is a cracker as is Finley Barbrook in the middle of the park.

McGlynn’s men made it four wins on the spin in the top flight for the first time since 2007/08 and it would be no surprise to see them kick on to enjoy another sparking season.

SCOTT SQUAD

Celtic’s woes will get much of the focus – but Scott Bain’s display shouldn’t get lost in the wash.

The former Hoops keeper haunted his old side with a sensational performance.

Scott Bain of Falkirk

Bain made at last half a dozen superb saves to put up the shutters all afternoon.

Falkirk fans chanted ‘Scotland’s No.1’ – and they might have a point.

Bain is a shoo in to be involved in Sebastian Pocognoli’s squad for North Macedonia and Switzerland.

But maybe it's time to give him a crack at the top spot ahead of Angus Gunn.

He’s in the form of this life.
