Youri Tielemans accuses the Manchester United dressing room of lacking 'effort'

Youri Tielemans believes Manchester United's problems can be put down to a combination of "tactical, technical and effort".

Michael Carrick's side suffered an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday night, struggling to get to grips with the well-coached Italians throughout a trying 90 minutes.

The defeat represented United's worst in Europe since 1996 and comes at a time when they have made their worst start to a Premier League season for 40 years.

Tielemans attempted to find an explanation for the team's dismal performance during a post-match interview with TNT Sports.

"There was a lot said at half-time to try and get back into the game, which didn't happen," he said. "We conceded straight away after half-time, and then you try to do something, and we get outplayed. We got outplayed for most of the game, so it was a very disappointing night."

Asked why United were so poor, he said: "It's everything. You can be good tactically but if the effort isn't there, or the other way round, you have to be good at everything, but tonight we were poor at everything.

"It's the same message as we've had the last few weeks. We can be here and talk about it, but we have to show it on the pitch. We can only apologise to the fans who travelled, the fans who watched us from home and support us. They're disappointed and we're disappointed.

"The only thing we can do is try to show something on the pitch, which we haven't done over the last few weeks."

The Belgium captain then set alarm bells ringing when he suggested effort is a problem in the dressing room. "It's a combination of everything: tactical, technical, effort," he said of what has specifically gone wrong at United.

Speaking to TNT, Michael Carrick said: "It was more than disappointing. I think everybody has got to take responsibility for that. I 100% take responsibility for the overall team and the performance - that's where it stops.

"It stops with me and I'm absolutely fine with that. I accept that totally. But as a supporter of this football club for so long, to see a performance like that is unacceptable, I have to say."
