The November 10 trade deadline is a mere two weeks away but it appears the Indianapolis Colts are already open for business. After firing general manager Chris Ballard, the team is now trying to accumulate assets, first by trading Quenton Nelson, and then by moving DeForest Buckner.
Sent back to the San Francisco 49ers, the team that initially drafted him, the Buckner trade drew instant reactions from NFL analysts. However, fans couldn’t help but notice that ESPN analyst Mina Kimes wasn’t too thrilled with the Buckner trade.
Buckner began his career with San Francisco, which selected him seventh overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. He earned his first Pro Bowl selection with the 49ers before being traded to Indianapolis in 2020, where he added two more selections.
This season, even with the issues across the entire defensive unit, Buckner was the one exception, as he ranked inside the top 5 of PFN’s DT Impact Metric. As a result, for a 49ers squad that has just one loss so far, he was an ideal addition.
As she broke down the trade on “NFL Live,” Kimes didn’t seem all that enthused with the trade. As news broke and the panel reacted to it, her underwhelming reaction was clear to see, asshe tried to sow some doubt about how the move would solve the Niners’ issues on the defensive front.
“He gets to come home at a very reasonable price. He’s got 20 pressures and 6 sacks on the season. So, obviously adds to that pass rush. I do think that run defense is maybe still potentially an issue on the interior of the San Francisco defensive line, having watched Buckner this year.
“I’m not so sure, personally, it addresses their biggest weakness, but obviously a helpful addition.”
However, fans didn’t see it that way. Instead, they believed her fandom for the Seattle Seahawks, who are divisional rivals with the 49ers and so far the only true competition to win the NFC West, was clouding her judgment.
“Mina sounds like one hater there lol,” one fan joked, as another fan added, “Mina has to learn to put her bias to the side.”
One fan went so far as to call her “salty” over her take, while another fan implored, “Please stop letting Mina react to Niners news. She clearly can’t put her Seahawks bias aside and provide objective analysis when it comes to the Niners.”
One fan took great joy in her supposed misery, claiming, “Mina, Seahawks fan, looks upset!”
Despite her lack of enthusiasm about the move, Buckner does give the 49ers a valuable player for their defensive front. And for a team that has started the year at 6-1, it gives them some reinforcements as they try to position themselves as a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
The Niners, currently enjoying a bye week, will have an opportunity to show how the move works out when they go up against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9.
