Wei Lin guides Oregon MBB to blowout win over Eastern Washington

The Oregon Ducks were far from perfect, but they still managed to take care of business at home against the Eastern Washington Eagles, winning 98-71 to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Wei Lin took over in the second half and wound up leading the Ducks with 20 points off the bench on 7-of-9 shooting from the field with a trio of triples. He added four assists and a career-high three steals in the win, stepping up in the absence of Tyrone Riley IV, who is set to miss time with an injury.

Four Ducks finished in double-figures as Oregon outscored the Eagles 45-32 in the second half to cruise to a victory, despite committing 13 more turnovers.

Oregon struggled to pull away early in the first half but continued to play efficiently by attacking the basket, taking a 53-39 lead into the locker room. The Ducks shot 63.3% from the field in the first half, as Malique Ewin dominated inside with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Six turnovers kept Eastern Washington within striking distance for much of the first half, but the Ducks closed the half on a 15-4 run to create some separation. Fred Payne and Lin both sank 3-pointers just before the halftime horn.

Without Riley, Oregon's new depth in the backcourt stepped up, playing more aggressively from beyond the arc in the team's second game. Payne splashed four 3-pointers, and Oregon hit six triples in the first half, more than the team made in the entire game against Montana. Payne finished the night with 16 points, and Oregon was 9-of-25 from deep in the game.

Oregon pulled away quickly in the second half thanks to Lin, who had the hot hand. One of the few returning players for the Ducks this season, Lin's early contributions off the bench this season have been impressive. After scoring 10 points off the bench in the opener, Lin scored 11 of his 20 points in the second half against the Eagles.

Pharaoh Compton stuffed the basket with some loud dunks on the fast break, finishing with 13 points and making all six attempts. The San Diego State transfer snagged four rebounds as well, helping Oregon outrebound Eastern Washington 38-24.

Oregon took care of business defensively as well, limiting Eastern Washington to 54 points in the paint and forcing 13 turnovers. The Ducks also did a nice job spreading the ball around, finishing the night with 26 assists, led by Ewin with seven.

The Ducks will look to improve to 3-0 to start the season when they host Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday night at Matthew Knight Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST.
