'Cooking Without LeBron (James),' 'Caitlin Clark of the NBA' -- Hoops World Marvels As Luka Dončić's Historic 52-Point Eruption Keeps Lakers Undefeated

Luka Dončić erupted for 52 points Sunday, spearheading the Los Angeles Lakers’ 132-123 comeback win over the Utah Jazz with the first 50-point game of the 2026-27 NBA season.

The sensational road performance quickly sent the hoops world digging through the Lakers’ record books, while others turned straight to the early MVP race.

Luka Dončić’s Historic 52-Point Outburst Fuels MVP Buzz

The Jazz, led by Lauri Markkanen’s 28 points and Keyonte George’s 24, punished the visitors’ sluggish start at Delta Center. Utah turned 6 first-quarter offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points and led 47-29 after the opening frame. The Lakers promptly erased that 18-point hole with a 45-point second quarter as Austin Reaves poured in 15 points.

Dončić, who had 25 points at halftime, closed the first half with a 3-point play, a steal from Ace Bailey, and a flashy 3-pointer to give the Lakers a 74-71 lead. The Slovenian superstar then took over late in the fourth quarter, burying a game-tying triple with 4:06 remaining before drilling back-to-back 3s to reach 50 points and put LA ahead 127-121.

After Reaves, who finished with 29 points, hit a dagger 3-pointer with 32.9 seconds remaining, MVP chants rang out as Dončić put the finishing touches on the win at the charity stripe. He shot 17-for-30 overall (56.7%), 8-for-18 from deep (44.4%), and 10-for-11 from the free-throw line (90.9%), adding 8 rebounds, 10 assists, and 2 steals in 38 minutes.

The NBA’s X account put Dončić’s performance in historical perspective, noting that he became the first player in Lakers franchise history to record 50-plus points, 10-plus assists, 5-plus rebounds, and 5-plus triples in a single game.

NBA insider Marc Stein tied the night to the league’s top individual award: “First 50-point game of the 2026-27 NBA season: My MVP favorite Luka Dončić.”

“Will this be the season Luka finally wins MVP?” Basketball Performances added.

“Got clowned for saying this the obvious MVP,” one fan chimed in.

Another took the conversation in a different direction, with a WNBA comparison: “Really the Caitlin Clark of the NBA. Breaking all these records and doing historic stuff while being underappreciated by the fans and the voters.”

Beyond the award chatter, the 52-point showcase drew sheer admiration. “Can’t say I’m surprised the first 50 bomb of the season goes to Luka Dončić, he’s unreal,” NBA content creator Six Rings of Steel gushed.

ESPN’s Sam Block reached for even loftier terms, calling Dončić “one of the most gifted basketball players any of us have ever seen.”

Per StatMuse, Dončić now has more 50-point games as a Laker (three) than franchise icon Shaquille O’Neal (two).

Additionally, the 27-year-old became the fastest player in franchise history to reach 3,000 points, needing 95 games compared to George Mikan’s 106 and LeBron James’ 114. He also moved past James for the sixth-most 40-point outings (19) as a member of the Purple and Gold.

James joined the Philadelphia 76ers in the offseason, leaving Dončić as the clear-cut top dog in LA. The four-time MVP’s departure came up in another fan’s take: “Luka and the Lakers are really cooking without LeBron, man … This season might finally show everyone who the actual problem was all along.”

Dončić, for his part, called the late barrage “one of the best feelings,” but he also issued a warning about how the night began: “We learned our lesson, so we cannot start games like this anymore.”

The six-time All-Star praised his teammates, too: “I think we have a great group … I love playing with these guys.”

At 3-0, Dončić and Co. sit tied for the best record in the league. The Lakers host the undefeated Portland Trail Blazers (2-0) on Tuesday, looking to extend their season-opening winning streak to four games.
