After his three wins in the 2026 U.S. Chess Championship so far in different endgames, GM Wesley So defeated one of his nearest pursuers, GM Andy Woodward, in a pawn endgame in the eighth round. He is now on six points and extends his sole lead to a full point over GM Fabiano Caruana, to set up an all-important clash in the ninth round on Monday, after a rest day. Woodward, GM Jeffery Xiong, GM Awonder Liang, and GM Grigoriy Oparin, are all in the next point group with 4.5 points.

IM Alice Lee missed a chance to capture the sole lead in the 2026 U.S. Women's Chess Championship when she could not capitalize on a large advantage in a heavy-piece endgame against IM Anna Zatonskih. Lee continues to lead the table along with WIM Rachael Li on six points. In turn, GM Irina Krush could not make use of the opportunity and even lost to WGM Jennifer Yu to remain on five points. WGM Thalia Cervantes is in close pursuit of the leaders with 5.5 points after defeating the defending champion, IM Carissa Yip, with the black pieces.

After a rest day, round nine resumes on Monday, October 19, starting at 1 p.m. ET / 19:00 CEST / 10:30 p.m. IST.

Open: Wesley So Wins An Equal Pawn Endgame To Extend Lead

Round 8 Results: Open

Considering that he had captured the sole lead at the end of the previous round, it was no surprise that So had increased his chance of winning the tournament.

Still, there were always chances for the pursuing group to catch up with the leader, with successful results in the final stretch and the leader himself losing his grip on the proceedings. But, as it turned out, it was not to be.

To start with, perhaps unhappy with the quality of his previous game and looking forward to rejuvenating on the rest day before the final three games, Liang made a quick draw with GM Abhimanyu Mishra. Caruana, too, could not make much headway with the black pieces against GM Sam Sevian and the game ended in a draw in 42 moves.

Interestingly, Xiong's game against GM Ray Robson followed the same moves as So's game against Woodward until the 17th move, and Xiong seemed to have developed much better chances to press for an advantage than So.

Going through the game, one cannot help but get the feeling that Xiong missed a good opportunity at this crucial time of the tournament to pursue an advantage in the endgame.

Oparin did try whole-heartedly and created good chances against GM Levon Aronian, but he missed two good opportunities to create a strong attack on the white king.

So, amidst all these missed opportunities, it was the leader of the tournament, So, who succeeded in doing the difficult job of winning an endgame that looked equal for a long, long time. He was rewarded for his efforts when Woodward missed his way while nearing the first time control. This is our Game of the Day, analyzed by GM Dejan Bojkov below.

Looking at the round-nine pairings, Caruana-So will be the fight to look forward to. Playing with white pieces, Caruana can be expected to go for a win at all costs, especially after a rest day, while a win for So would put him close to winning the tournament and take him up to world number-three. Less critically, Woodward vs. Xiong will also be an important game to decide on the top finishers of the tournament, while Niemann-Sevian could potentially see GM Hans Niemann fall out of the 2700 club with a loss.

Women: Missed Opportunity For Lee; Krush Loses Crucial Game

Round 8 Results: Women

Considering Lee's form and promise, it is understandable that she is the frontrunner among favorites to win the tournament.

But it is also interesting that Li is the next favorite for the top honors, considering that this is her first appearance in the national championship.

Lee indeed developed a slight advantage typical of the Catalan Opening, right from the beginning, and seemed to gradually develop her advantage.

Li seemed to get into trouble early against IM Tatev Abrahamyan, with her Modern Defense against 1.e4 creating considerable dark-square weaknesses on the kingside. It was a complicated clash, where both players had their chances.

Thus, with both the joint leaders missing their opportunities, Krush had an opportunity in her hands to win her game and jump into the joint lead herself. Considering their memorable clash in 2022 while fighting for the title in the very same tournament, her game against Yu was an important encounter.

This gave Cervantes an opportunity to move up the rankings. She was involved in a bizarre game against Yip, in which White allowed a mate-in-one at the end.

With just three rounds to go, the Krush vs. Lee encounter will be the big one to look forward to in the next round. Unlike the open section, the women's section has lots of opportunities for drama, still.
