The results of the Mexico Grand Prix have been amended following several penalties handed down by the stewards late on Sunday evening. Oscar Piastri, Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto were all given time penalties after the F1 race, allowing several drivers to move up into the points. Mercedes was also fined after George Russell failed to attend his media commitments.
Gasly received the harshest penalty. The Alpine driver failed to slow sufficiently under double yellow flags and was given a stop-and-go penalty. As the race had already ended, this was converted into a 30-second time penalty. He was also given two penalty points on his super licence.
Gasly and Alpine argued that he had significantly reduced his speed. The stewards reviewed his telemetry and compared it with that of other drivers who had passed through the same section. They concluded that the reduction in speed was insufficient to comply with the regulations.
His teammate Colapinto received a 10-second time penalty for failing to slow sufficiently under a single yellow flag. The Argentine and Alpine tried to show, using telemetry and photographs, that he had complied with the regulations, but the stewards were not convinced. Colapinto also received one penalty point on his licence.
Piastri was also given a 10-second time penalty, in his case for causing a collision with Arvid Lindblad. The penalty was added to his time after the race and cost the McLaren driver seventh place. He dropped out of the points.
Mercedes was fined €5,000 because Russell skipped his mandatory post-race media appearances. The Briton had already left the circuit without fulfilling those obligations. Russell also did not attend the stewards’ hearing. A Mercedes representative provided an explanation by phone.
The penalties did not affect the top six positions. Max Verstappen remained the winner, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and newly crowned world champion Kimi Antonelli. Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris and Russell also kept their positions.
Further down the order, the impact was significant. Piastri dropped from seventh to 13th and lost the six points he had scored. Colapinto fell from P8 to P15, losing his four points. Gasly dropped seven places, from P10 to P17, and was left without any points from the race.
Liam Lawson benefited, climbing from ninth to seventh. He therefore scored six points instead of two. Gabriel Bortoleto moved up three places to P8 and earned four points, while Isack Hadjar rose from P12 to P9, adding two points to Red Bull’s tally.
Ryo Hirakawa also ended up in the points. The Haas substitute for Esteban Ocon climbed from 13th to 10th and earned one point. An already impressive result on his Grand Prix debut became even more special: Hirakawa, who took over from Ocon midway through the race weekend, scored his first point straight away.
Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz each gained three places, finishing 11th and 12th. Nico Hulkenberg moved up from P16 to P14, while local hero Sergio Perez climbed from 17th to 16th.
