Daniel Dubois might be at rest after blowing sizeable holes in the career of Fabio Wardley, but he’s scanning the ever-changing heavyweight landscape for his next target.
One man stands tall above the rest: Tyson Fury.
Dubois, the WBO titleholder, can boast a victory over the other leading British heavyweight of his generation – a fifth-round KO of Anthony Joshua in 2024.
The 29-year-old has also shared a ring with Oleksandr Usyk, losing twice, and Filip Hrgovic, the current IBF champion whom he stopped in 2024.
Fury and Joshua collide in Cardiff, Wales, on December 11 in a showdown to which the WBA plans to add its “super” title. Dubois hopes it’s victory for the “Gypsy King” who, like Dubois, is promoted by Frank Warren.
“That'll be ground-breaking,” Dubois told Sky Sports about the prospect of being matched with Fury next year.
“That'll be the next level for me.
"I've fought everyone then really from this era. I've fought them all. Fury's the last one.
"Fury's a fighting man, I'm sure he would want it. Let's see how he does with AJ. Let's see. I'm sure Frank [Warren] would love to make that fight.
"This is what boxing is. This is the highest level really, this is it at the highest level. This is what it looks like.”
Dubois’ ability to brush off defeats and reinvent himself should not be underestimated. He was accused of quitting against Joe Joyce; there were question marks surrounding his belief in both defeats to Usyk.
Now he’s the in-form heavyweight in the division after beating Wardley, then unbeaten, in 11 rounds back in May before repeating the trick in just two rounds at the weekend.
Dubois, then, is a long way from the crude and inexperienced fighter who once sparred Fury.
"That was just when I was turning pro," Dubois said. "I went to spar his cousin Hughie and then [Tyson] popped in for a few rounds. Great memories, great work.
“He was massive then,” Dubois added, referencing Fury’s weight as he made his comeback in 2018. “He was elusive.”
The long game for Dubois, 24-3 (23 KOs), is to gain undisputed status at heavyweight.
"To win all the belts,” he said. “That's the main thing now for me, collecting all the other belts. It would mean everything to have all those belts. No one can take that away from me.
“That's what I'm after now.”
