Trey Nyoni’s Liverpool career hit two big milestones this week after the youngster followed up his first Premier League start with a maiden goal for the Reds.
Nyoni was arguably Liverpool’s best player during their disappointing Champions League defeat against Fenerbahce, and with Ryan Gravenberch now injured, the 19-year-old will likely keep his place for the visit to Selhurst Park this Sunday.
However, while Nyoni’s rise has been good news amid two worrying losses for the Reds, Jamie Carragher has claimed that his impressive displays have shone a light on what looks like a poor decision to hand Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai bumper new deals.

Liverpool LOSE 3-2 to Fenerbahce… what is your reaction to that performance? 😳
Nyoni was always likely to make an impact at Liverpool this season after the Reds opted to put faith in him to step up rather than sign a replacement for Curtis Jones.
So far that looks like being a great decision from the recruitment team, but according to Carragher, the fact that Nyoni is now outperforming both Gravenberch and Szoboszlai suggests they may have been too quick to spend big money on retaining the two senior midfielders.
“Nyoni and Ngumoha were the best players for Liverpool, and they were a week or so ago against Chelsea,” the Liverpool legend told CBS Sports Golazo after Wednesday’s game.
“But they also play in a position of players where Liverpool have spent big money. Barcola’s come in for £120m. He played up front tonight, didn’t play well, but the younger player’s playing better than him. With Trey Nyoni in midfield, Liverpool haven’t spent expensively on a player as such, but they’ve given big contracts this summer to Ryan Gravenberch – who was left out at the weekend for Trey Nyoni – and Szoboszlai who played tonight and didn’t play particularly well.”

“It doesn’t matter the figures, but you can imagine the type of figures they will be on. When a young player in midfield is playing ahead of them, that causes a problem about where you’ve spent your money. You basically haven’t spent your money well enough.”
Although Szoboszlai’s new deal was being clamoured for by supporters, his performances this season have suggested that his extension could soon be viewed as an expensive mistake.
In terms of Gravenberch, there was a strong argument that he was not playing well enough to be granted a new deal, and his reversal to being a bench player for Liverpool has been coming since the start of last season.
So, while Nyoni’s performances are obviously a big bonus for Andoni Iraola, the possibility that he becomes a permanent fixture in the XI instead of either Gravenberch or Szoboszlai is definitely a somewhat embarrassing scenario for Liverpool.
