Dujon Sterling has been among the standout performers this season for Rangers and has emerged as the first-choice right-back.
The English defender has made the spot his own after James Tavernier’s departure and has kept new signings Ross McCrorie and Kosta Nedeljkovic out of the team with his consistent performances.
Sterling did have a minor injury issue recently, but it did not cause him to miss any games, much to the delight of Derek McInnes.
Rangers News exclusively revealed on Thursday that Sterling had entered a two-year extension with his agency as his contract at Ibrox appeared to be running down. Transfermarkt claim that his deal is set to run out at the end of the season. However, that is not understood to be the case.
Sources have told Rangers News that Sterling has a year and a half left to run on his deal at the club, meaning his contract runs until the end of next season. It’s understood that the hierarchy are pleased with the right-back’s performances, and that he is enjoying life at Ibrox.
As things stand, neither party is considering an exit either in January or in the summer. While talks have not opened for a new contract yet, it is not an indication that the right-back is looking to leave.
Rangers are still to receive any proposals for the right-back, who is in no way forcing an exit from the club. His priority is to remain fit and potentially help guide the team to the Scottish Premiership title this season.
After Tavernier’s exit, many believed that Sterling would not be able to replace him due to his injury issues. However, he is starting to prove his critics wrong, and fans will undoubtedly be delighted with his performances.
He still has 20 months left on his current deal and is unlikely to be thinking about a new contract. If he stays injury-free and performs as he has been in recent months, there’s no doubt that a new deal will be on the table for him.
Sterling is one of the best defenders in Scotland when fit and only seems to be getting better. If he does not fancy another challenge elsewhere, he could go on to stay at Rangers for years to come and potentially become the club captain as well in the future.
