Once again, three New York Rangers prospects stood out in CHL and USHL play. In what’s becoming an early-season trend, forwards Darian Anderson and Spencer Bowes continued to pile up points, and goalie Danai Shaiikov turned in another strong performance.
Let’s examine how each of the Rangers prospects in the CHL and USHL fared last week.
Anderson did not score during regulation or overtime Friday, but his shootout goal lifted Flint to a 4-3 win over the Saginaw Spirit.
The Firebirds blew a 3-0 first-period lead and were outplayed the rest of the way by their archrivals. Anderson had one shot and finished minus-1 in 65 minutes of game action before the shootout.
Saturday was a different story. Anderson set a career high with four points (two goals, two assists), when Flint defeated Saginaw 6-2. With the Firebirds trailing 1-0 in the first period, Anderson threaded a pass between two Spirit defenders to Ryland Cunningham, who converted for the goal.
After Flint took a 2-1 lead later in the first, Anderson earned his second point during a scramble in front of the Saginaw net. He got the puck to linemate Martins Klaucans, who scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal.
Anderson scored twice in the third period after Flint led 4-2. Cooper Williams first found Anderson driving to the net, and Anderson scored his eighth goal of the season on a backhand to make it 5-2.
Anderson completed the scoring with Saginaw on the power play and its goalie pulled, sending a shot from center ice into the empty net for a short-handed goal.
He was named the game’s first star after finishing with two goals, two assists, five shots and a plus-2 rating.
On Sunday, the Firebirds extended their streak without a regulation loss to eight games (7-0-1) with a 1-0 victory over the Soo Greyhounds. Anderson was scoreless but had a team-high six shots on goal. He has nine goals and nine assists for 18 points, most among Rangers prospects.
Anderson leads Flint and is tied for eighth in the OHL with his nine goals.
Shaiikov and the Olympiques faced the Saint John Sea Dogs in QMJHL play Friday. Although he earned the win in a 7-3 victory, it was not one of his better performances.
Shaiikov had little chance on Saint John’s first goal because his teammates failed to clear traffic from the crease. He stopped eight of nine shots in the first period.
Shaiikov was responsible for the second goal. He left his crease to play the puck but sent it directly to a Sea Dogs player, who scored into an open net. Shaiikov faced seven shots in the second period.
The third goal was one Shaiikov should have stopped, as a clean shot eluded him with no screen. Saint John had 10 shots in the third period.
On Sunday, Shaiikov was named the game’s third star in Gatineau’s 2-0 loss to the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. He allowed one goal and made 23 saves, with the second goal scored into an empty net.
Shaiikov is 5-2-2 with a 2.68 goals-against average and .898 save percentage. The 19-year-old is second among QMJHL goalies in games played (11), tied for fifth in wins, tied for eighth in save percentage, and ninth in GAA.
Bowes and the Ottawa 67’s faced off against Rangers defenseman prospect Andre Mondoux and the Kingston Frontenacs on Friday in the opener of a home-and-home set. Kingston won 4-2, ending Ottawa’s seven-game point streak (6-0-1).
Bowes was Ottawa’s bright spot, recording a goal and an assist to extend his goal and point streaks each to four games.
On Sunday, Bowes scored Ottawa’s only goal in a 6-1 loss to Kingston. His first-period power-play goal opened the scoring. It was his 11th goal of the season, tops among Rangers prospects and tied for fourth-most in the OHL.

Mondoux was scoreless Friday when Kingston ended Ottawa’s seven-game unbeaten streak with a 4-2 victory. He did not record a shot and finished minus-1.
On Sunday, Mondoux earned the primary assist on the game-winning goal when Kingston defeated Ottawa 6-1. He finished with one assist, two shots on goal and a plus-1 rating.
Mondoux has four goals, four assists and a plus-4 rating in 14 games this season.
Felix Farhammar wore an alternate captain’s “A” on Friday, but Muskegon was shut out 3-0 by the Lincoln Stars in USHL action. He was limited to one shot. Earning a letter after only 10 games in North America speaks to how quickly Farhammar gained the team’s trust.
The native of Sweden was scoreless Saturday when the Lumberjacks earned a split in the weekend series with a 4-0 victory over Lincoln. He had two shots on goal.
Zeb Lindgren was pointless Friday when the visiting Penticton Vees defeated Red Deer 4-2. He had one shot on goal and finished minus-1.
Lindgren was scoreless again Saturday when the Rebels extended their winless streak to three games (0-2-1) with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
Artem Gonchar was pointless Thursday when Sudbury held off the North Bay Battalion 4-3, and without a point again Friday when the Wolves lost 5-3 to North Bay. He did not record a shot and finished minus-3.
However, Gonchar celebrated his 20th birthday Sunday by earning the primary assist on Sudbury’s first goal and scoring the only goal of the shootout in the sixth round, giving the Wolves a 3-2 victory.
He has six assists in six games this season.
Evan Passmore and the Colts earned their second win of the season Thursday, defeating the Owen Sound Attack 4-3 in overtime. The Barrie captain was held to one shot on goal, didn’t record a point and finished minus-1.
But it was back to their losing ways the rest of the weekend. Passmore was pointless Saturday when Barrie lost 7-4 to the North Bay Battalion. The loss dropped the Colts to an OHL-worst 2-10-1.
On Sunday, the Colts completed a stretch of three games in four days with a 5-4 overtime loss to Owen Sound. Passmore was poinbtles with two shots on goal and finished minus-2. Barrie is now an OHL-worst 2-10-2 (.214 points percentage) through 14 games.
