Celta Vigo fans take over Merchant Square before Celtic game

Ahead of the game, the Sky Blues supporters congregated in Glasgow's Merchant Square, buzzing for the clash.

Anyone expecting to turn into the area and see the usual wash of green and white hoops was in for a surprise, instead finding what felt like all 3,000 Vigo fans gathered in one place.

One such fan was Alvaro, who said: "We are so happy to be here because we have a special relationship with people from Celtic.

"The people are amazing, the country is amazing... we are fine!"

He spoke on his way to join the crowd which seemed to only grow and grow as the match drew nearer.

Among the many Spaniards were Christian, Javi and Pablo who stood with drinks in hand, happy as can be as they took in a gorgeous Glasgow sunset.

Christian echoed Alvaro's sentiment, saying: "Glasgow is fantastic!"

Pablo and Javi doubled down, chiming in with "beautiful" and "incredible" respectively.

The boys were giddy with anticipation, the way youngster should be ahead of what could be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Celta Vigo spent nine years without European football before qualifying for the UEFA Europa League in the 2024/25 season thanks to a seventh-place finish.

They bettered that achievement last year by finishing sixth.

That secured another campaign in the competition, with the draw handing them away trips to Romania, France, Cyprus and Glasgow.

After such a lengthy absence from European football, these trips are not being taken for granted. Another fan, also named Pablo, said: "This is special because we are not used to playing abroad, so Celtic is a nice game to watch."

"I like Glasgow. The only problem is the weather, but in Vigo the weather is much the same. It's always raining in winter."

As the fans marched down the Gallowgate towards Celtic Park, there was an undeniable feeling that no scoreline could take away from their excitement.

That did not stop Pablo from predicting a win, though. He remained confident that the Spaniards would leave Glasgow with a 1-3 victory in tow.
