Palace beaten 3-1 by Liverpool to leave Sage hanging by a thread

Alexis Mac Allister, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak ensured that Andoni Iraola’s side moved into 4th place and returned to winning ways after defeats to Arsenal and Fenerbahçe SK last week, although they were denied a clean sheet by Eddie Nketiah’s late penalty.

Liverpool dominated the opening stages, but the hosts came closest to scoring in the opening 20 minutes, with Yéremy Pino crashing one off the crossbar.

Palace had the ball in the back of the net through Jørgen Strand Larsen’s clever dink over Alisson, but the offside flag was raised, and VAR checked and confirmed it.

The visitors should have taken the lead in the 37th minute, but Bradley Barcola smashed a volley over from close range; seconds later, Daichi Kamada had a close-range of his own brilliantly blocked from point-blank range by Alisson.

The Reds took the lead soon after though, as Dominik Szoboszlai’s free kick to the front post was nodded in by Mac Allister. Palace had conceded yet another set-piece goal in this Premier League season.

They would double their lead ten minutes into the second half. Barcola showed electrifying pace down the right-hand side before he played a brilliant cross, which Wirtz calmly finished into the bottom left corner for his first league goal of the season, and the first since April when these sides last met.

The Eagles were denied a route back into the game with 13 minutes to play as Alisson made another vital stop to deny Pino from close range, before the Brazilian reacted quickly to deny Jefferson Lerma’s rebound.

Dean Henderson made a brilliant save to deny Isak, but it wouldn’t be long before Liverpool’s record signing made it 3-0.

Another counterattack saw Víctor Muñoz’s cross finished brilliantly by Isak for his seventh Premier League goal of the season.

Despite a mass exodus at Selhurst Park, the Eagles had a penalty which Nketiah placed into the right corner with the final kick of the game.

Sage’s future will now be the main topic heading into the international break, but in all likelihood, there may be a managerial change by the time the Eagles return to action in 13 days.
