Bristol City suffer more home woes after late goals win it for Wolves

Scott Twine's free-kick had put the Robins on course for victory until Sean Neave scored two late goals.

Bristol City suffered a third successive home defeat after two late goals saw them beaten 2-1 by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Robins took the lead in the first half through a spectacular Scott Twine free-kick which looked for long parts to be enough for the win - before a late brace from super sub Sean Neave turned the game on its head and earned Wolves all three points at Ashton Gate and take them second in the Championship.

Michael Skubala named two changes to his Robins side following their 3-2 win over Portsmouth last time out, with Twine and Sam Bell replacing Brian De Keersmaecker and Dom Ballard.

The City faithful got on their feet early on, when Bell looked to pounce on a loose pass from José Sá; however, he was unable to get a shot away before being tackled. Brad Collins was the first to make a save this evening when he got down low to keep Adam Armstrong’s effort out.

City’s first real chance of the night fell to Lorent Tolaj, who got on the end of a sumptuous cross from Rio Cardines, but couldn’t keep his header down.

The opener came shortly after, when Twine converted an excellent free-kick from 25 yards. It was a fifth goal of the season for the number 10 and saw another from a set piece for the specialist.

Wolves came close to levelling the score before the break when Marshall Munetsi headed over from inside the area, meaning the Robins took a one-goal lead into the break.

The visitors came out of the traps quickly in the second half, with Knight blocking a shot from Munetsi inside the area before Armstrong forced Collins into a smart save minutes later.

The pressure continued, although this time City somewhat did it to themselves, when Lisav Eissat’s loose backpass was met by a Wolves attacker. However, Cam Pring raced back and made a superb tackle to prevent what almost certainly would have been an equaliser. Yu Hirakawa was then introduced from the bench, replacing Bell.

Collins was called into action again on the hour mark, gathering Rafiki Saïd’s shot at the second time of asking, having nearly dropped it at the feet of Armstrong. The City keeper made yet another stop minutes later, this time palming away a header from a corner.

A double change followed for the Robins, with Jed Wallace and Ballard replacing Twine and Cardines. Ballard almost made his presence felt immediately when he put the ball in the net in the 71st minute, before being flagged offside.

Wolves saw strong penalty appeals waved away shortly after, following a coming together between Eissat and Neave. Neave got his name on the scoresheet moments later to equalise for the Old Gold, following a goalkeeping error from Collins as he tapped in from close range.

Ballard looked to immediately restore City’s advantage, but saw his strike saved by Sá. Joe Williams was then replaced by Adam Randell in the middle of the park.

A slip from Pring nearly proved costly in the latter stages of the game, but Neave couldn’t keep his strike on target after the ball made its way to him in the box. He made no such mistake in the 88th minute, though, when he headed home at the back post to give his side a late lead.

City failed to create a chance to level the score in the five minutes of additional time that followed, meaning they fell to a 2-1 defeat as they stay 15th in the table.
