The Swede lived up to his billing in a highly-anticipated bow over the distance, while Sheila Chepkirui secured another success in the women’s race
Andreas Almgren made an impressive marathon debut as the emerging distance-running force triumphed over 26.2 miles in New York.
Almgren’s first outing had been highly anticipated after the Swede shattered the European half marathon record on his way to the world title in Copenhagen in September.
The 31-year-old did not disappoint, timing his surge perfectly to win by 13 seconds in a time of 2:06:01 – continuing an excellent year that also saw him win continental gold over 10,000m on the track in Birmingham.
In the women’s race through the five boroughs, Sheila Chepkirui claimed her second New York City marathon success.
The Kenyan had previously won the title in 2024 and escaped from compatriot Hellen Obiri in the final miles, with home hope Jessica McClain finishing quickly to snatch second.
There was, meanwhile, a familiar Swiss double in the wheelchair races as Marcel Hug and Catherine Debrunner added another major marathon victory to their respective tallies.
