Eddie Howe has emerged as a leading contender to replace Michael Carrick at Manchester United, but a significant obstacle could complicate his appointment.
The former Newcastle manager is reportedly interested in the Old Trafford position as United’s disastrous season threatens to claim another managerial victim.
Carrick has overseen just two victories in 12 competitive matches, with Sunday’s humiliating 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth extending the club’s winless run to eight games.
United sit 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone.
Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox held crisis talks at Carrington on Monday, while Carrick watched the Under-21s draw 2-2 against Hull City.
Howe’s extensive Premier League experience makes him an attractive candidate.
He famously guided Bournemouth from League Two to the Premier League, winning the Championship title in 2015.
After joining Newcastle in 2021, Howe transformed their fortunes, securing Champions League qualification before delivering the 2025 Carabao Cup.
The triumph ended Newcastle’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.
Having stepped down in July, Howe is open to replacing Carrick, although he initially intended to take an extended break from management.
However, with United chiefs reportedly divided over potential replacements, another complication has emerged.
According to The Telegraph, Manchester United could be required to pay Newcastle up to £6 million in compensation to appoint Howe.
Despite leaving Newcastle in July, the 48-year-old still had several years remaining on his contract.
The Magpies reportedly included financial protection against Howe joining a rival shortly after his departure.
Consequently, United could face a substantial payment despite the Englishman currently being unemployed.
The development complicates a potential appointment, with Julian Nagelsmann also attracting interest from United’s hierarchy.
No formal approach has been confirmed, while Carrick’s future remains unresolved ahead of Tuesday’s training session.
