Steve Borthwick looks set to leave Courtney Lawes out of his next England training squad, despite the veteran forward's return to the Gallagher PREM.
The 37-year-old is back in English rugby with Sale Sharks after a spell in France.
His return had raised hopes of a shock England comeback. However, those hoping to see Lawes pull on the white shirt again may be disappointed.
According to The Times, Lawes is not expected to feature in Borthwick's upcoming training camp.
It is a notable call, given the experience Lawes could bring to England's pack.
While Lawes looks set to miss out, Borthwick is reportedly preparing to welcome back two other players.
Joe Marchant and Will Joseph are both expected to be included as England build towards the Nations Championship.
Marchant was part of England's 2023 Rugby World Cup squad before heading to France.
Joseph, meanwhile, has been working to force his way back into the international picture.
But for Lawes, the wait looks set to continue.
Lawes retired from international rugby after the 2023 World Cup, having won 105 caps.
But his move from Brive to Sale came with a change of heart.
Speaking to The Times in September, Lawes said:
"Steve's aware that I'm back and he's going to wait and see how I play. That's the best thing for everyone."
He also made it clear he would not demand special treatment.
"If I can be of use to the team - playing - and if I can do what I've always done, lead by example, then that's what I'll do."
Lawes has his sights set on a fifth World Cup in 2027. At 37, time is hardly on his side.
But writing him off would be brave. Few players have matched his impact in an England shirt.
England begin their autumn campaign against Australia on 8 November.
They then face Japan and New Zealand at Allianz Stadium before a final Nations Championship play-off.
Lawes may not be among Borthwick's chosen players, but his England ambitions are not necessarily over.
The door remains open. Whether Borthwick walks through it is another matter.
