Maidenhead United’s Women’s team progressed to the second round of the FA Cup for only the second time in their history on Sunday after overcoming a doggedly determined Andover New Street Ladies side 3-0 at York Road.

York Road was hosting a first-round clash for the first time, and the Magpies made the most of it, with the club offering free family tickets to watch the tier 4 side take on tier 6 opponents.

Not surprisingly, Dave Kitson’s side had the better of the game, but New Street remained very much in the tie until late on when goals from Aaliyah Charles and Leah Robertson finally confirmed their progress to the second round, and another home tie against AFC Wimbledon.

The Magpies will take on step 3 side Wimbledon at York Road on Sunday, November 15.

United had the better of the opening exchanges, with club captain Simone O’Brien striking a post. But the hosts had to wait until late in the half when Izzy Stockton headed home Katie Akerman’s cross to make it 1-0.

That’s the way the scoreline remained until the 80th minute when Charles netted to give the home side a little breathing space.

The tie was then finished off in the 87th minute when Leah Robertson smashed home from distance. having seen an earlier effort from much closer in roll agonisingly wide of the post.

United were quickly back in FA Women’s National League Division 1 South West action on Tuesday as they travelled to bottom club Ascot United.

Ascot had lost all their previous league games this season, but recent performances had been improving with the team pushing Abingdon United all the way in a narrow 2-1 defeat.

The Magpies also went into the clash off the back of indifferent performances and results against Marine Academy Plymouth - where Stockton’s last-gasp goal rescued a point - and Gwalia United, which saw the home side lose 3-0.

But Kitson’s side bounced back in style, with three former Ascot United players playing their part in a 5-1 win at the Racecourse Ground.

Akerman smashed them in front from a free kick which squeezed through a gap in the wall and into the bottom corner.

United - who fielded three former Ascot United players in their line up - were two goals to the good after 20 minutes thanks to a stunning strike from Charles.

Ascot had lost every game they’ve played this season, but their performances have been improving of late. They were only narrowly defeated by Abington United - who put five past the Magpies earlier in the season. And the hosts managed to give themselves a foothold in this all-Berkshire clash when Grace Amos was beaten by Jocelyn Ivy Earl’s strike in the 54th minute.

The Magpies needed a quick response, and they got one on the hour mark with Akerman sending a left-footed shot from outside the area into the back of the net via a deflection.

Substitute Izzy Stockton got in on the act in the 72nd minute with another headed goal - her third in four games - and in the final minutes defender Molly McKeever scored her first for the season following a well worked set piece. The result lifts the Magpies to seventh place on 10 points.

Kitson’s side are back at York Road on Sunday when they host Lewes in the FA Women’s National League Plate (2pm kick-off).
