Eagles star sparks concern after lying motionless in end zone

Andrew Mukuba soared for what appeared to be a pivotal interception on Sunday night, but seconds later the Eagles safety was lying on the field as a stadium packed with spectators anxiously watched.

During the opening quarter of Philadelphia's matchup with the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium, Jayden Daniels launched a pass that Mukuba jumped to intercept, rising approximately eight feet before landing forcefully. The sequence seemed like a crucial early momentum shift for an Eagles squad that has faced challenges throughout the season.

The play was nullified, however, as an offside infraction erased the interception. Mukuba remained on the ground following the impact, prompting trainers to hurry over while play was halted.

Mukuba rose and made his way to the sideline independently, then entered the blue medical tent for additional assessment.

The second-round selection from Texas and Clemson, chosen 64th overall in the 2025 draft, was building an impressive rookie campaign with two interceptions, three pass deflections and 46 tackles across 11 games when he suffered an ankle fracture against Dallas in Week 12, requiring surgical intervention. He was added to injured reserve on Nov. 26, 2025.

His inaugural career interception occurred against Kansas City, when he caught a ball that ricocheted off Travis Kelce's hands and ran it back 41 yards, while his second came off former Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz. Mukuba's journey to the NFL is nothing short of remarkable.

Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, to parents who fled the Democratic Republic of the Congo as refugees, he and his family relocated to Austin, Texas, at age nine after being granted asylum in 2012.

Introduced to football in fifth grade by his physical education teacher, Mukuba blossomed into a four-star recruit, making an immediate impact as a freshman at Clemson and claiming ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

The Eagles were desperately in need of a boost heading into the game. Philadelphia entered the night with a 2-5 record and without starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, sidelined for the season with blood clots in his lungs, leaving Tanner McKee at the helm of the offense.

Wide receiver DeVonta Smith was also sidelined with a hamstring injury, while the defense, which ranked fifth in points allowed last season, has tumbled to 21st this year.

The Commanders, sitting at 1-4-1, were also dealing with key absences, missing receiver Terry McLaurin and defensive tackle Daron Payne, both lost for the season.

The contest got off to a slow start. Washington opened with a promising 44-yard kickoff return from Luke McCaffrey, but consecutive false start penalties, one attributed to Daniels, forced the Commanders into a 55-yard field goal attempt that sailed wide right.

Philadelphia responded with a three-and-out drive when McKee, under heavy pressure, failed to connect with Darius Cooper on third down.
