Glasgow football tournament brings Scotland women together

Held in Glasgow and organised by social enterprise Street Soccer, the event brought together players from across Scotland, including those preparing to compete in the Women’s Homeless World Cup in Mexico City this January.

Players from Street Soccer’s regions in Glasgow, Fife, Dundee, and Edinburgh took part in the tournament, including members of the Women’s Homeless World Cup team.

Kirsten Oswald, Scotland’s Minister for Victims and Community Safety, visited the team and Street Soccer staff at Powerleague Townhead as part of the Scottish Government’s Women and Girls in Sport Week.

Oswald said: "It was hugely inspiring to meet the Women's Homeless World Cup team and I wish them every success as they proudly represent Scotland in Mexico next year.

"Women and Girls in Sport Week celebrates the life-changing effect sport has on women and girls, and organisations like Street Soccer show why that matters.

"I was grateful to hear first-hand how Scottish Government investment has helped participants build confidence, connection and belonging in the face of significant challenges."

The MSP also highlighted new government plans to increase opportunities for women in football.

Oswald said: "The First Minister has also announced Project 2035 this week, to create more opportunities for girls and women across Scotland to play, coach, officiate and lead in football.

"Street Soccer's Women's Programme shows what is possible when sport is open to everyone."

Street Soccer supports people facing issues such as addiction, social isolation, poverty, and poor mental health.

Through free, inclusive, and trauma-informed football sessions, the organisation helps individuals of all backgrounds build relationships, find support, and develop a sense of belonging.

Its women’s programme plays a vital role in creating safe, welcoming spaces where women can participate regardless of their circumstances.

The charity’s impact reaches hundreds of people across Scotland.

Research from last year found that 93% of players felt part of a community through Street Soccer, and more than three-quarters said they had greater hope for the future.

sportscotland, the national agency for sport, has worked closely with Street Soccer, including funding its 2026 Summer Series through the 2026 Summer of Sport.

The regional events brought together 200 people at each location, offering opportunities to play, socialise, and build new friendships.

Forbes Dunlop, chief executive of sportscotland, praised the charity’s work.

He said: "Women and Girls in Sport Week is always an important week in Scottish sport.

"It gives us the chance to reflect on and showcase all the great work being delivered across the sporting system to encourage more women and girls to stay physically active or become physically active.

"We know that sport brings immeasurable benefits to individuals and communities across Scotland.

"The work Street Soccer does is a great example of that, they are showing that sport and a sense of belonging can truly change lives."

David Duke MBE, founder and chief executive of Street Soccer Scotland, welcomed Oswald’s visit.

He said: "It was fantastic to welcome Kirsten Oswald to Powerleague Townhead and have the opportunity to showcase the impact our women’s programme is having across Scotland.

"Her visit was a great chance to celebrate the women taking part, hear their stories and highlight the importance of creating safe, inclusive spaces where women can build confidence, friendships and a sense of belonging through football.

"It was also brilliant to see our Women’s Homeless World Cup team coming together as they prepare to represent Scotland in Mexico City.

"We’re incredibly proud of them and look forward to seeing them take this next step."
