Five stand out sporting fixtures across Powys this weekend

Newtown turn on the lights for Buckley test

It is the latest kick-off anywhere on the County Times football list and gives the Robins a prominent Saturday-night billing, with the rest of the division's listed games having kicked off hours earlier.

There is plenty of local interest elsewhere in Cymru North, with Caersws and Guilsfield also at home, but Newtown's evening fixture stands apart from the usual Saturday afternoon programme.

Buckley provide the opposition as the Robins look to make home advantage count.

Powys rivals collide with cup progress at stake

One of Saturday's most eye-catching ties comes at Welshpool Town, where Builth Wells visit in the third round of the Central Wales Cup at 2.30pm.

Unlike the weekend's league programme, there is no question about what is immediately at stake here: a place in the next round.

The all-Powys contest also brings together two sides from different parts of the county in knockout football.

It is one of three Central Wales Cup third-round ties on the fixture list, alongside Waterloo Rovers against Lampeter Town and Carno against Llechryd.

For County Times followers, though, Welshpool against Builth offers the obvious local confrontation.

Radnor and Llanfair go head-to-head

There is another all-Powys contest at Radnor Valley when Llanfair United arrive for Saturday's Ardal North East League fixture at 2pm.

The meeting ensures local bragging rights as well as league points are on the table.

It is also the only Ardal North East fixture included in the supplied County Times programme, giving Radnor and Llanfair centre stage at that level on Saturday afternoon.

Anything about their respective form or league positions cannot be confirmed from the copy.

Brecon fly the flag in County Times rugby

Football dominates the programme, but there is a major rugby date in Brecon as they welcome Trebanos in the Admiral National Championship West at 2.30pm on Saturday.

It is the highest-level men's rugby fixture involving a County Times club in the programme, sitting above the area's games in League One, League Two, League Three and League Five.

That makes Brecon the natural focal point of the weekend's local rugby card.

The home side have the chance to put themselves at the heart of Saturday's sporting programme when Trebanos arrive in Mid Wales.

Llanfair women face Nomads challenge

There is another significant home fixture at Llanfair United on Sunday as Connah's Quay Nomads visit in the Adran North at 2pm.

It is one of two Adran North matches listed, with Berriew travelling to Bangor 1876 in the other.

Llanfair therefore provide the County Times patch with a home interest as the women's programme takes over on Sunday.

The fixture also gives the weekend variety after Saturday's extensive men's programme, while women's football continues elsewhere with five Central Wales Women's League fixtures.

For Llanfair, attention will be firmly on their own home meeting with Nomads.
