West Norfolk Swimming Club celebrated its biggest and most successful appearance at the Swim England National Masters Championships, returning home with three medals and a string of impressive performances.
The club sent a record 18 swimmers, aged between 19 and 61, to the prestigious three-day competition at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield from October 23 to 25.
It proved a remarkable championship, with competitors setting 11 world records, 23 European records and 39 British records.
Leading West Norfolk’s medal charge was Emma Simmonds, competing in the women’s 50-54 age category.
Simmonds struck gold in the 100m butterfly, producing a sensational performance to smash her lifetime personal best by five seconds.
She followed that achievement with bronze in the 50m butterfly before adding a silver medal in the women’s 160-plus 200m freestyle relay.
Joining her on the podium were Helen Lali, Lucy Rodwell and Gretta Stark, who combined superbly to secure second place.
The same quartet also finished fifth in the women’s 160-plus medley relay.
Simmonds and Lali came agonisingly close to another medal in the mixed 160-plus medley relay, alongside Will Wakefield and Finlay Ryan, missing bronze by just one tenth of a second to finish fourth.
